04 oil filter question

04 oil filter question
does the 04 WRX have the same filter as the 03, becasue the filter i bought at Kragen's was for an 03 since the dont have the 04 listed but it seems to be bigger than the stock one.

Checked Fram's website. i picked up the correct filter. it doesnt really matter anyway, since i couldnt even get the stock filter off.

Yes, the filters are the same but Subaru changed suppliers or something so the part number changed.
The new OEM filters are black, I think that's the only difference. HOWEVER the turbo Impreza filters are smaller than the NA filters so make sure you have a turbo filter.
P.S. filter wrenches can be your best friend.

since both white and black OEM filters are useable does that go for aftermarket filters as well?
in the scoobymods thread, it says that this fram filter should be used: FRAM OIL FILTER: PH6607, i purchased this fram filter from Kragen's: PH3593A. should i go change to the proper one or will i be ok.
PS: i finally finished the only change after i borrowed a different filter wrench from a friend, which means changing filters would require new oil too.

Dont_use_080_on_pre-04_wrx?
From_what_I_hear,_the_080_(new_smaller)_oil_filter s_are_for_04_WRX's.__The_060_(older_bigger)_oil_fi lter_should_still_be_used_for_02_WRX's_due_to_the_ new_080_(new_smaller)_filter_possibly_leaking_due_ to_poor_fitment_on_pre_04_WRXs.__Can_anyone_confir m_this?__

First time I've seen that mentioned. Not sure what the deal is there. I don't know what the difference would be. The filter gasket and threads are in the same place:

the new smaller filter is a must for o4 foresters with turbo. they have an oil line that will not let the larger older filter fit this is probably the same for the sti. if the larger filter fits why not use it is not more filter better? the threads and the rubber seal is the same for both filters only the can is bigger. go online and find a subaru parts supplier that will discount the filters such as 1stsubaru.com. by 6 orso at a time and don't forget the drain plug gasket. not all oil filters are the same! some use cheap flat gaskets instead of o rings thin wall cans and poor filter material. note the new filter is made in japan where the old filter is made in usa. must not had the time to tool up for the new engine.

Just because a filter is larger does NOT mean it has better filtering ability. The smaller filter in this case in fact has a larger surface area inside to capture dirt. It's what the filter material is made out of not always the amount of it.
PN 60 filter surface area 760cm2
PN 80 filter surface area 800cm2 (a 5% difference)
Also, the reason they went from the larger filter to the smaller one is the smaller filter gives more clearance from the headers and that keeps the filter itself cooler and prevents cooking the oil from the outside.
As far as leaking due to the difference between the internal part being concave or convex. As long as you have the filter spun on so it grabs all the threads (only about 3 deep) it's not gonna fall off. The only way it will leak is from around the gasket if you have it too loose or over tighten it to where the metal of the filter contacts the oil cooler an starts to distort the base of the filter itself.
I'm just going by what Subaru is saying:
Subaru is stating
that ALL MY2002 and newer -
turbo models only - should use AA080
and all NA (non turbo'd) should continue
to use the AA060 (with the exception of the H6, SVX, Loyale...)

the picture shows that line going parralle with the filter mount on my forester xt the line goes down and the clamp will not let the large filter screw on. if the line was like the one in the pic i would have screwed the large filter sold in error to me. it seems that between the missprint in the owners manuel and the confusion about filters it's good there is a the i-club forum to inform subiest or is it subafiles.
