I bought a yakima q-towers/bars/ski rack for my wrx...
but everytime i use it, it leaves marks in the shape of the rubber foot things on my paint! how do i get them off??? they don't seem to wash off...
how do i prevent this from happening?
does anybody else have this problem, or have the yakimas but NOT have marks?

Very common problem. That's why I choose a wagon over the sedan (built in rack). It should be a crime to install a rack on a WRX sedan.
Had the same thing happen to me on another car. Not just Yakima racks that will do it, my Thule's have done the samething.
Unless you remove the rack and clean the contact area's regularly this will occur. On my Dodge Spirit I never removed the rack, left it on for a couple of years. When I finally removed it, the paint was bubbled and starting to rust.
You might want to try a clear 3m tape. Not sure what it's called, but I know there is a single sided tape out there that can be put on paint to protect it.

I installed both yakima and thule systems when i worked for an outfitters store. (worked in the bike shop, they are my other love)
you could leave the rack on all the time, but that is sorta criminal. haha. also leaving it on has a tendency to deform the rubber window gasket, and can cause leakage. i think the idea about the clear plastic is your best bet. the rack will always have just enough movement to ruff up the paint. it happens to all cars, not just yours. sorry.

damn. i wil ltry the 3m tape solution.
what's the best way to try to buff out the marks that are already there?
rednek - thanks but i have those already. tis' the actual tower contacts that are causing the problem.

Had a Yakima rack on one of my cars for years, never been removed though.... Ski and board in the winter and bikes and windsurfers in the summer... Don't really care about possible scratches, it is more or less a perm install! The auto-x guys get a kick out of it though, they strip out the car and I leave mine loaded up! Functionality = fun

Welcome to the wonderful work of ski racks!
As Homer once said, "Yeaaahhh, they'll do that....."
THe dealer racks are terrible and don't give you as many options. So, good choice with the Yakima rack.

Where is the rust???? Under the rubber pads, I don't think so. The last car had the rack on from day one. 12 years later I sold it to a friend who removed the rack and the roof was fine. You could tell there was a rack there once but it was on for over a decade... And no, there wasn't even surface rust...
If you want to get away from any possible impact, put a hitch on and go with a hitch mount system. Or like the other person, get a wagon and stuff everything in and carry less passengers.
In any event, get out and enjoy life!

From: North Idaho it's c-c-c-c-cold!
Car Info: 2002 WRB WRX / 06 f150 King Ranch
Dirt and debris collects at the sides of those pads. I thought of getting some sort of clear tape like stuff to place on the body of the car where the pads rest. So when debris gets in there it won't scratch it up. Plus don't drive under a low carport with your bike on there. You will surely leave huge marks on your roof. I did it and it was expesive and did I ever feel stupid. Doh!

i tried using some clear packing tape under the pads this time. it seems to have worked great in keeping the marks off the paint! but i only had them on for 1 day, so i don't know if there's any problems with keeping the tape on for more than a few days.

I should have changed it every couple of years.

Here is the info about the 3M Paint Protect Film. 3M states that it is removable.
I think you can get it through a body shop and get it applied

You didn't apply it to the body did you? When it settles and decide to remove it, some paint will also be removed with it.

yeah, i did apply it to the body. since i take off the rack as soon as i get back from the mountain (at most a couple days), i figured it wouldn't actually get too settled. and if i keep a consistent layer of wax on the car, it should be all right, right?
