So I almost got my dream car, 03 aspenwhite WRX. but now i'm kinda happy i didnt cuz i think i really want the power of the 300hp 6speed. The circular lights is what sold me on the 03 along with the white that i never see around cuz of the excess of blue. EWW. Now to the point. I've found so many posts and info on other site about the difficulties with paint especially and sounds and ticks from drivetrain but then the dealerships dont wanna be bothered with the problems and consumers are paying for it. I love AWD and the boxer engine but i dont wanan be left with a hole in the water that i keep throwin money into. Are there any cars out there that are turbo and AWD. JDPower gives WRX only 2stars for mechanical while it gives almost a full 5 for the celica and other cars.:O( what do some of u have to say?
you do realize that the 300hp and 6spd comes in the WRX STi right? the 2004 WRX is mechanically the same. im just saying, because it doesnt seem clear you understand that. going from a 03 wrx to a 04 sti is a big jump financially.
hey Slamsitin you really do pose alot of intersting questions. I own a 94 Camaro Z28 and a 89 taurus SHO. I love both cars but owning two cars while still in college is a major pain. So i was looking into a 2004 WRX so i can have only 1 nice car. I love the WRX, i loved test driving it, but have heard too many problems and have started to change my mind. Keep in mind only started to change my mind, i am still leaning toward a WRX over all other cars but subaru is really going to have to convince me that the 2004 is better in some way for me to buy my first ever new car
you'll love the car. Just trust me on this one. take it from someone with experience... The cars are great!
Just some people don't realize how different a subaru is. Yes, it makes noises, that's how the AWD system works. Yes, the paint sucks. trust me, it's just PAINT, not your piston rod cracking. The cars are reliable, and they are mechanically sound. I don't mind that the front of my bumper and hood look like it was shot up to a million peices by a BB gun. Paint chips are just gonna happen on stock paint. It sucks, but for me, hearing that burbly note while driving and getting sideways on freeways on ramps in the rain makes it so worth while. I love my car, even if it's starting to show wear and tear at 96,600 miles.
Just don't drive hard on it for the first few months. get used to it. Break it in properly. You'll love this car. If you don't think you're ready for it, then i'd suggest a Eclipse GSX, but i'm only going to say once, that they got serious engine problems. or so i hear.

I also need to mention that JDpower is the WORST magazine to read about cars on the planet. Completely biased and sells its self to the highest bidder...
Read Consumers Reports for reliability information, and other magazines like Car and Driver, Motor Trend, Sports Compact Car, and Automotive Magazine for better information.

p.s. i only have 76,000 on my 1994 Z28 haha

I drive a 1999 2.5 RS Coupe. The wrx in my opinion is even better fit and finsh. Kosta is 100% correct, look at Consumer Reports.

Erm Consumer Reports is junk too. They're basicly "pay us and we'll give you a good rating." Pfft. Talk to real owners. Ones with both good and bad views on the car and you'll get a very good cross section of what the cars are like reliability wise.
I don't think consumer reports is junk. I think what they say is pretty much true. I mean, i read it, and look around, and makes sense. Which cars are high matinenece, and the such.
But it's cool, you're absolutly right, talk to owners.

So far...
I have put about 32K on my WRX, since I bought it, in July '01. No major problems with it...except one window switch (replaced under warranty), and the clutch chatter, which is a common issue with this car (also being replaced under warranty -- even at 32K miles).
Other than that, no odd noises, no other problems, and man, the thing is quick. I am sure that the STi, with it's 6 speed, and loads of HP and Torque will be even better, and stronger since the tranny is tons better.
Of course, my car is still stock, but that's OK, cause I can take mostly anyone I have encountered, 0-60 in no time. I barely street race anyway, cause it's not cool...but in the odd event that it does happen, it's over in about 6 seconds...and yeah, I have a wagon to boot.
And lemme tell ya, I drove from NY to New Orleans in 21 hours...no hint of any issues, at ALL! Drove like a dream on the way down - WITH FULL AC ON ALL 21 HOURS - and the same on the way back up. Mind you, I was out in the middle of Tennessee at about 2:30 am flying through the roadways, as there were NO cars out on the roadway...I maybe passed 1 truck every 30 minutes or so.
I am sure the car will last, and given that I take care of it more than I take care of my girl, I know it will last (but the girl gets some other nice treatment
). I am glad that I bought it when I had the chance...and I am even more glad that I had the chance.
Later,
i.

Assuming for a moment that JD Powers is perfectly honest and legit, there is a problem with their system. It is based on "initial satisfaction." IIRC, the way it is figured is they get responses from new buyers of cars. Each and every complaint is marked, say one point, against that car. This is regardless of the complaint.
Therefore, if they get 20 complaints about the tranny failing in a Plymouth and 40 complaints about chips in the paint on a Subaru, guess who gets a better rating by JD Powers? The Plymouth.
Subaru is not a car maker that worries about the fine touches of a luxary car. They get the engine right and all that makes a car a car. But they admittedly don't worry much about the interior or any extras. Hense they get creeks and rattles pretty quickly. These get rated as complaints to JD Powers.
One way of noting this is how low Subarus are on JD Powers yet how well they do on long term satisfaction and reliability ratings (check Consumer Reports).
Once you get past the rough edges, the car itself should last forever. What is it? 94% of all Subarus are still running...

I just came to the Subaru camp from the Nissan camp because my (and my GF's) Nissans were POS. When you boil it all down ALL cars have some weak spots. You have to weight the negatives against the positives and decide if you can live with them. This is a fact...accept it! I see that you live in NH, a WRX is the best car you can get for our type of weather (i live in VT). Even with all its power and all season tires the car is a blast in the snow!
I am a little biased, but dont reject the car because of what you read here. This is not the bible of Subarus! If you look at other car forums , not just Subaru, out there they all have gazzilions of gripes posts from people about thier Honduhhhs or Rustangs(mostly about how slow their cars are).
