Is the WRX STi really a whole lot faster?
I am getting an 02 or 03 WRX indefinately however I was wondering how much faster the car really is or if it is just a little bit quicker. I noticed that the stock times for a 2002 WRX for the 0-60 was 5.4 seconds with a 14.1 1/4 mile @ 96 mph. I then found out that the STi was 4.9 0-60 with a 13.2 1/4 mile @ 103 mph. I am aware of the HP difference and all the other more hardcore features of the STi but is it really a huge performance difference that the hype makes people believe?

The STI is a whole different beast. It has a larger motor and turbo, better suspension and brakes, stronger transmission and rear end and in its stock form would run circles around the stock WRX on the track.

Should that change the way I feel about getting a regular WRX? I could get an SRT-4, or another car like it in the pre $20,000 catagory because I can't afford an STi for a couple years but I figure a couple years with a WRX and then upgrade to the STi, I am just going with what I can afford and I see the WRX as the best bang for the buck.

there is nothing wrong with the wrx. it is still worth getting despite the sti has such a performance difference. go take one for a test drive and then decide
WRX with cobb stage 2, about 1500$ is about the same comparably speed wise to a stock STI, ad a few more things and you could run a hi 12. But it doesn't handle as good and the tranny isn't as smooth and doesn't take as much power.
I have stage two, sti intercooler, gruppe-s v2 manifold, helix uppy, helix downpipe, hks exhaust, and a k&n air filter. I beat the crap out of lightly modded evo's, and STI's ( Down pipe, exhausts, intakes......) I really dog, SRT-4's from a dead stop, and pretty bad from a roll, Most of the ones around here have intakes, exhausts, other random MOPar stuff done to them. All of this is Quarter mile, and closed tracks. LOL
But I don't know what you want your car for, if you want to be cheap, fast, and reliable. It's really not going to happen. pick two. If you just want to go out and race people or whatever your flavor is, get an SRT-4, get an exhaust, and a manual boost controller, and a direct port nitrous setup, and you could problaby hit a low 12, those engines can take a lot of abuse stock, but I don't know how they hold up after the long run.
But to make a WRX or STI, faster then 99% of the cars on the road, it doesn't take much, but it's a little bit trickier to do it and not make the car run like crap.

I would have gone STi, but they are very limited as far as interior size.
I went with the wagon so I could carry larger stuff (bikes, kyaks etc).
I think you have to look at each car and see what it offers and what you want out of it.

If I didn't want awd for the snow, and was most concerned about a quick, fun car which responded well to mods, the SRT-4 would be higher on the list than a WRX.
