what are you carrying? i've got a yakima setup on my WRX that was about $300. i carry my surfboards to and from the break on it, and with an adapter or two it would work for my snowboards or mountain bikes. i bought all the parts at my local REI.

i don't have any pictures of my car with the roofrack on right now, but i can get you a couple in a day or two. i have to work late tonight, but i'll break out my digital camera tommorow afternoon when i get home from work and post some pictures for you.

You can eliminate the howling with a fairing. I've driven without the fairing at times and the howling noise is unbearable. I already had bike racks to fit the round Yakima bars, so the flat factory bars would have required me to buy all new everything...

 

i think yakima makes the best rack system out there. thats what i have on my car, its very sturdy and can be taken on or off in just a couple minutes

 

as promised, here are photos of my '03 silver sedan with the yakima rack. it's pretty low profile, and the front air dam (or whatever you want to call it) makes it so things are relatively quiet.

shamrock's right, definitely get the fairing. the catch is that you can't use the Yakima bar pads with the front fairing attached. my solution was to go to the local hardware store, and buy a 6 foot long piece of foam pipe insulation. cut a piece about the same length as the yakima pads, and then use a hot knife or something similar to cut out notches where the fairing clips sit. i used zip ties to hold the pad on, instead of the velcro and elastic ties that yakima puts on their pads. if you want pics, just let me know.
