Why so many rex's 4 sale??

Though there have been earlier-vintage (eg '95) Imprezas in my immediate clan in the past and present, I really only "discovered" the WRX in April when I was casting about madly looking for a replacement for my totalled mini-ute. Thank DOG I bought every New Car Buyer's Guide available at the bookstore and happened, by sheer luck to stumble upon the writeup for the WRX- just in time, too. I came THAT CLOSE to buying a V6 Altima instead, now I am so happy that I found the WRX.
Anyways, I'm kinda interested in the resale value of cars so as I read the daily local rag every day I would regularly (every week at least) check in the want ads to see who was selling used Subys and for what price. To my surprise, NO ONE was selling WRXs. Ever. Not even a hint.
Until the last 2 weeks. Now I've seen ads for 6-8 of them, all 2002, ranging from I think about 17K to 22K (the latter was apparently extensively modded out).
So my question is this. Are there really that many guys swapping out their rexes for STis (or, dare I say it, Evos)? Or is there something else going on?
I also ask b/c though my rex is by far the best car I've ever owned (I've owned 4-5 cars, all bought new), I am still in the back of my mind thinking of trading up to the STi. That car is so damn awesome (at least once you put in a damn radio).
What is YOUR theory about this?
PS, I've only seen 2 other WRXs here in NM but the other day I saw a new STi go by. Also noticed 2 days ago that my drive home forces me to pass by a dealership with an STi, same color as mine but looking 10x badder, on the way. I might have to change routes.

WRXs for sale
Haven't seen too many for sale in So. Cal. Pretty consistant, 2-5 for sale in Sun. paper. Pretty fast depreciation though, 18-19k for REX with pretty low miles. I'm anticipating quite a few on the used market from guys who got hammered by unmanagable ins. rates. Sincerely, Collins

While I'm sure some people are trading up for STis and Evos, I think a lot more younger people are realizing they bought cars they can't afford the payments or insurance for. I know a number of people in this situation. It could also be people genuinely displeased with the car after a couple years, but there's probably fewer of those.

Check out how many WRX's are on E-bay. There were definitely not that many before the announcement of the STI. Or maybe the "loyal" bugeye owners have finally come back to reality and traded up for the newer looking WRX...just joking
Long live the bugeyes!!!

Well there have been quite a few WRX's made so far, probably close to 50k or more, so seeing some for sale shouldnt be that odd. There were only about 1/5th that amount of RS's made between 98 and 2001 so thats why its probably odd to some people.
As for depreciation, the WRX is holding up very well despite what is being said here especially when compaired to other car models.

Given that the 04s are out for months now, and that 02s were bought for $22-24K or so, I don't think that asking prices that begin at $17.5K are a mark of a rapidly-depreciating car.
Quite the opposite.
well, as a guy brought up on forged internal, iron block cars, I was a little disapointed that the WRX EJ205 was aluminum and cast. So in a year or two I might consider either swapping in the EJ207 from an STi7 or selling the car for a '93 MR2 non-turbo and do the JDM GENIII MR2 swap (which would cost me 10,000 including the car, and hold 300rwhp on turbo, 400rwhp on fuel and 500+ rwhp on internals compared to like 280 on the stock TD04 on the WRX and 350 or so for stock internals on the rex)
I mean, this is a great car. With 4 comfortable seats I was sold in buying this car,
but maybe people are going past all the hype of "the wrX can run 12's with 3 mods!" and realizing that while this care is certainly good all around, its performance and potential can be matched and exceeded by older, much cheaper cars such as the 240sx and MR2 (provided you have the mechanical and technical know-how)
I dunno, just IMHO.

and besides,
America doesn't care much about the image of rally-racing and all wheel drive. This is very sad but true. The WRX will definately have a cult following here, especially now that the f-bodies are dead and gone.
For 2005, they have to use the EJ207 and put a TD05 on the rex!

WRX depreciation
Hey Guys, I'm not being disloyal in my comments that rex's depreciate pretty quickly. Just my observations from the L.A. area. I own a 03 REX and love it. Best car purchase I ever made! I almost bought a S2000, but WRX really had more to offer. But in all honesy, let's be honest about it's rate of depreciation. You can reasonably expect the WRX to depreciate about 25% after you drive from the showroom. The S2000 loses about 5% of it's value. The S2000 has very little depreciation, the WRX is about average. Does'nt mean it's an average car, just average loss after purchase. Vette's lose about 10%, Porches 6-12% depending on the model. We love to compare our REX's with it's competition, let's be accurate. Sincerely, Collins

they seem to hold up reasonably well to me. I have been shopping for months now. I have gotten down to two tough cars and one tough decision. used or new.
They seem like they are dropping quickly but they really aren't...the 04's are out so these 02's were generally bought in 01.
You have to take into consideration a few things. First the release of the new model. Second, it's the first WRX in the state...new car different expectations. Third it's a performance car...generally speaking performance cars loose value quicker.
Take into account the S2000. When it came out it was damn near a $50k vehicle because of mark ups and all that crap...within a year you could pick one up with under 10k miles for around $32k. That's a hell of a lot more than the percentage drop you claimed. You can't put into comparisson a car with more history.
Vette's and porsches in particular have huge huge history in the states and a top notch reputation build over 50 years and more. Of course they won't drop that much because people know better.
Give the rex some time.

The WRX has only depreciated 20-25% over 2 years from my calculations. Thats not very high at all. Its actually closer to 15% if you check the dealer retail prices for used 02 WRX on KBB and Edmunds. Private sale is of course higher depreciation.
I rarely seen ANY Sub's in the classifieds of the NY Times or the Westchester County Gannett papers. There was ONE 02 with a claim of 290 bhp (many mods?) asking $17K, with 36K miles. That's one I would not touch with any of my money! Just drive it and enjoy it: lots of other cars can do some things better, but none I tried before buying my WRX did as much, and so well. Now that it is broken in (11K miles) it purrs and whips as much as I want it to. See you at Watkins Glen 7/12-13!
