I'm not sure why but it seems many people are under the impression that the WRX or the STi isn't an Impreza. They are both Imprezas, just different trim levels is all. Subaru only has these models Legacy, Outback, (at one time were the same but Subaru broke them out a few years ago), Impreza, Forester and Baja. There are only two real platforms too, the Impreza and the Legacy. The legacy is used in the Baja and Outback the Impreza is for the Outback Sport and Forester.
In the US:
Forester: 5 trim levels
Outback:9 trim levels
Impreza: 5 trim levels
Legacy: 4 trim levels
Baja: 2 trim levels

Of course they are Impreza's. But it is a matter of semantics. When you ask a Corvette Z06 owner what he/she owns, the answer is most likely going to be "a Z06," denoting the passion and pride inherant in the ownership of the car.
When people ask me what I own, I generally say a "WRX." Like "Z06," the name stands on its own. That is not to say that "2.5RS" didn't stand on its own for Subaphiles, but probably not to the general public.
Peaty, when someone asks you what you own, you have to say "Forester XT," because "XT" simply won't stand on its own. "XT what?" people might say.
Anyway, my point is that they are not different cars, but that "WRX" and "STi" are recognizable without the "impreza" prefix.

Yes it was the RS that sparked everyones interest in the Impreza line and got the ball rolling faster, but I don't remember anyone at that time (having been there) not embracing all Subaru Imprezas, no one put anyone down or felt better than anyone else for owning an RS. We were all interested in just helping each other with our Impreza's as we were few and far between as it was with no aftermarket to speak of. The eventual attitude that started to set in of my RS is better than your L or later WRX is better than your RS is what started to move the I club away from an enthusiast site in my opinion. Which I think contributed to the eventual split. I'm sure it's not the whole reason, but I always thought Alex was/is more of a Subaru enthusiast at heart.

I am smiling, and agree with what you wrote. In fact, when a non-enthusiast asks me what kind of car I own, I usually reply "a Subaru," and leave it at that. It is difficult (and often frustrating) to explain a passion to the un-passionate.
I, too, remember January 2001 . . . when I-club was flooded with new WRX enthusiasts (wannabe's?), and bloated to over 10,000 members in several weeks time. That was a dark time when many long term technical contributors faded away, and the quality of posts degraded rapidly.
As a matter of fact, I can even remember a time when I discussed SF authors with other subaru owners in the general forum. But the community is too large for that now. It isn't worse, just different. This post is making me feel old. . .

I know exactly what you mean, the thing is I am old
HeeHee I think I was in on that
can even remember a time when I discussed SF authors with other subaru owners in the general forum.
That's cause american can't understand long names
Subaru Impreza 2.5 RS
Subaru Impreza WRX
Subaru Legacy GT Limited...
lol
Here is how it all started:
Alex made a site called ImprezersLair, which had a simple mesage board. That grew as more people found it, and he then created Impreza-RS.com. when that grew to about 4k and the WRX was announced to hit the US shores, he doubled up the site with I-club.com
Nov 2002- Alex is stripped of his admin rights via Nick. Alex manages to salvage ImprezersLair.com, Impreza-RS.com, and I-club.com from GoDaddy, and starts fresh. This site you see here is what is now I-Club.com
Impreza-Club was fitting, as 80-% of the members drive imprezas of some kind. However, there are many subaru owners on this site. There were many more when it was a cingular I-club. Legacy, Forester, SVX, Justy, Brat... etc.
T-WRX: I definitly feel you on how things changed. I joined in the massive heap (at the beginning of it
), but i do remember how things were cool, and mature.
