Whats that Sound? BOV or Wastegate

Everyone knows how a BOV(Blow-Off-Valve) works! On the WRC its always making a sound like a BOV but many times in a row. I dont know if this is a Sequential BOV or the Wastegate. Every single time the WRC changes its gear I hear that sound! Then I say WTF I want that on my WRX. Does anyone know what this is?

i believe that's a blow off valve, but the reason you hear th noise you do is because the wrc cars use an anti-lag system. i don't know how it works exactly, but it keeps the turbo spooled all the time, but it puts a major hurt on your exhaust system. i remember reading that it will burn up your whole exhaust in something like 10k km. i'm sure i'll be corrected on everything i've said... but i tried. hope that helps.

BOV

Thanks for the info. I agree with what you have said about the anti-lag system, that it puts a hurt on your exhaust and it does spool up the turbo But the anti-lag system makes an almost backfiring sound and a small burst of fire comes out of the exhaust... The anti-lag system works kind of like a bov...When you change gears or slow down the turbo is still spinning, when you take your foot off the throttle it closes a flap stopping the flow of air into the engine. this is commonly called the "butterfly" The turbo (still spinning) tries to keep pumping air in and can't. So it rapidly slows down with the restricted flow. When you put your foot down again, opening the butterfly and reducing the restriction the turbo has to "spool " up or gain rpms again to develop boost. (This is called turbo lag)
The BOV basically decreases backspin by Letting the excess air that has nowhere to go, out. The BOV Doesn't increase power or increase boost, It helps the turbo to not lag(some what like the anit-lag system)which increases your accelaration.

Thumbs up Its the wastegate!!

It is the Wastegate... You must have the anti-lag system in order to have that special sound. The anti-lag system gives you maximum boost as if you were at 6,000 rpms, but you are really at lets say 1,500. Every single time you let go of the throttle the anti-lag system makes a bang. Right before that piont there comes a fuel ignition piont within the exhaust(or turbo Not sure), The fumes from the fuel ignition piont help spool up the turbo, which keeps the turbo from lagging. As soon as the throttle opens then engine develops intake, at this piont the engine is developing boost by it self so the wastegate lets out all the fumes from the anti-lag system, which makes that special sound. Now the BOV works the opposite way when you close the throttle the boost has no where to go so the BOV comes in place and lets all of the excess air out. So, there is one wastegate in the back of the turbo near the exhaust letting the excess boost out that the anti-lag system made for th Turbo to not lag.T hen when the turbocharger develops boost by it self the wastegate lets out all of the fumes from the anti-lag system. Now the turbo doesn't lag because the turbine is spinning and when you open the throttle it already has developed boost. The wastegate lets out the dirty air from the anti-lag system because it works by the setup of fuel ignition. Those fumes get out and then Natural clean air goes into the intake manifold while having high boost and no turbo lag.

Its the waste gauge!!

Do you know exactly what setup is needed in order to have this sound. Or maybe only WRC-Prodrive products make this sound.
No other WRC cars sound like this. Only Subaru older mode from 1997-2000 Probably new setup is from 2001 and up.
Very interesting.

SETUP

I know the setup for the Ford Escort RS Cosworth! But this is not what we are looking for, anyway here it is!

1)P8 ECU - Which the big-turbo Escort Cosworth already has as it was made for rally.
2)Pectel anti-lag babyboard - An additional module to the ECU.
3)Anti-lag valve - Replaces the original idle speed control valve.
4)Modified throttle body - The inlet and outlet ports to idle valve bored out.
5)Turbo with 360thrust bearing - So that it will last longer.
6)EGT gauge - So you know when your turbo and manifold is going to melt.
7)Wiring to "arm" the anti-lag and switch it off - This simply involves wiring in a switchable earth to one of the ECU pins.

#1) It's Wastegate, NOT waste gauge...

#2) Yes, that little squirl chatter sound is indeed the wastegate. If one were to get an intake for the WRX, you can hear yours also, it sound like wooshing, repeatedly and fast... on the WRC car, it's a clatter, much sharper sound.

Setup

Nice setup for Cosworth any setup for Subaru Impreza?
What BOV, Wastegate and ECU are needed to achieve this sound?

Not sure YET

I am not sure yet what kind of wastegate, BOV, and ECU the WRC has. NOT SURE YET WOW! I didn't realize that I put WasteGuage as the Title Instead of WasteGate Thanks for telling me!

I agree

RalliArt,

I completely agree with everything you said, I know i probably on have this exact sound, I just want to know the setup so i can maybe consider doing to to my RallyCar, I plan on getting the ALS soon because the Scooby does lag a little in low rpm's

The chatter would only be reproducealbe on a car with a turbo that has a external wastegate, and that ran good amount of boost, and an antilags system...

very illegal.. a stock turbo would last like 1 week with anit-lag.

This is all doable with the up coming UTEC addon, and also with Autronic...

however, even a VF34 or 23, would last you a few weeks with antilag running... if even that...
