I get 19-21 in my WRX with bike racks or snowboard racks, depending on the season. I get about 22 on the freeway with the racks and about 25 if I take the racks off.
HEY!!!
I do have a Jeep Wrangler with a 350 V-8, 35 x 12.5in tires, and 3.73s; but I have a 5sp MT. I'm lucky if I can get 11mpg in the city w/o the 4WD. It drops down to about 8mpg if I engage the 4WD.
Jeeps are the best ... short turn radius, good view, curbs don't matter, V-8 makes a very quick acceleration to 45 or 60mph. Most cars can't take it in a jump to 30 or 45mph, as long as it's in 4WD. 2WD cars tend to spin the tires and lose.
My WRX has averaged 20mpg over 18000 miles. That includes when my clutch was slipping, half of this milage is highway, the other half is driving delivery in town.

I can get about 25 miles a gallon in mixed driving out of my 0'4 wagon if I watch my acceleration and drive more conservatively.
Highway I have been able to get just about 27 mpg

not too bad
I just took a 600 mile trip of mostly hwy driving, and got 27.5 mpg with the A/C on the whole time and the back hatch filled up with junk. Not too shabby if you ask me esp since much of the driving was > 80 mph
BTW I have a WRX Wagon with 5MT.
