Talk me out of my Honda...

i bought my si used and made the HUGE mistake of not having it checked out before i bought it. he turboed the engine without modifying anything, other than I/H/E. that is why the engine went out, had nothing to do with a faulty motor, just an idiot that owned it before me. i will not make that mistake again.

Going from a roll is not a strongpoint. They’re made to be drivable in all kinds of weather conditions (rain, snow, dry weather, even some off-road). I have no trouble going around the city, highway, or snow, but I’m not a racer nor am I a hardcore speed demon. From my experience though, the gearing can get frustrating. First gear is way too short. Second and third are ok, but fourth and fifth are too tall. If the gearing was “spread more evenly,” in my opinion, it would be better. But I’m not speaking for those who go to the track or street race.
As far as the engine goes, the car is too new to tell what kind of reliability it has. Generally though, you can look at consumer reports or some publication of that nature and get a feel for what kind of reliability the company has. But generally, treat the car well and it will return the favor.

I had a 1995 Honda Accord EX coupe in high school. I did the usual stuff to it: intake, exhaust, coil-overs, shocks, and even a carbon-fiber hood. It was fun while it lasted (and I still have the car), but I'm all about the WRX. I remember when I first test drove one, it was a big jump from my Honda when considering acceleration and handling. It tackled the tarmac with fury, and my Accord seemed like a POS during my drive home. It is better than Hondas in most categories, plus it has all-weather capabilities that makes it an all-purpose performance car. Whether you're spending a day at the track, running at the drag strip, going camping, or driving to the mountains to snowboard, the WRX will take care of you and put a smile on your face.
If you do get the WRX, DON'T get the factory spoiler. It's ugly and useless for the most part.

I had a 2000 Si and it was a great car. Hondas are just very solid cars. In my opinion the WRX is not very far off. The tranny is tough enough to stand abuse just don't go overboard and you'll be fine (constant high rpm clutch drops). The handling is just a good as the Si as well. My only complaint is how the tranny shifts but then again I need a short shifter like I had on my Si. I will go with everyone else and say to definitely get the WRX but don't get all those options. All I got was the STI shift **** and the boost gauge for my 03. I wouldn't even get the spoiler personally. You can get better, more aggresive looking ones for about the same price.
I am a former owner of a EBP 2000 Civic Si. The Si has a great motor and a slick tranny. However, it has no torque. The suspension is harsh and loud for my type of driving/roads. I found it one morning on blocks with the much coveted Si 7-spoke wheels stolen. Couple months later, it got broken into for the instrument cluster and other "Si" parts like the grill. Couldn't stand it anymore. I wanted something more low key and ended up trading it in for a '02 2.5RS.
For $3K more than the Si, I got 50% more torque, AWD, ABS, a pair of extra doors and peace of mind knowing that no one is going to mess with my RS when there are plenty of WRX's to rip off.
I wish I still had the Si NOW so I could trade it for a '04 WRX. The new seats and headlights are so much nicer looking. I was never all that hot about the Neon-esque headlights of the 02-03's.

I've seen the comments on the paint chipping, but I've actually had pretty good luck with my WR blue '02 Rex. I picked up a few small chips on the front of the hood in the first months. Since then, the paint seems to be holding out well. I regularly wash and use good wax products (Mothers). I've touched up my 5 or so chips and the car still looks sweet, but if I were you, I would at least invest in one of those clear stick on protective sheets for the front of the hood (I've seen that a lot of recent cars come with them stock). If you really want, you can also have a good body shop add extra clear coat to the hood and any other areas you may be concerned about. May be a little pricy, but it's your call.
Reliability wise, mine has been a champ for the (almost) two years I've had it. Lovely car.
