Happened yesterday on rt-83N in Harrisburg. Tractor trailer (speeding) carrying 45,000 gallons of Liquid Nitorgen rear ended me on the highway, traffic was stopped/backing up. The truck drove up the back of my wrx and pushed me underneath the stopped tractor trailer in front of me.
It took firecrews about 15-20 mins to extract me from the wreck.
They took me to the Trauma unit, got looked over, and was released a couple of hours later. Few scrathes and a black eye.
It's amazing I'm alive.

Well, on some of those photos you ARE seeing what the car looks like after the Sawzall/jawsoflife routine the FD put on 'em. Though no doubt there was plenty of damage before.
When I was a kid, a relative would come to the scene of a wreck and drive the car home - you went to the morgue. Now, folks get a bandaid or 2 and the car's totaled. The entire car is now just a crumple zone around a bunch of airbags pointed toward the 'pink-body' on the inside.
SAVE THE PINK BODY!

Rescue crew cut the driver sida "A" frame and cut off the driver side door. They peeled back what was left of the roof (not much).
The airbags are awesome! really amazing how well they work.

Well, an argument could be made that the CAFE rules (at least early on) caused designers to hack off weight - leading to more dangerous vehicle and probably a few deaths. The rebound from that was safety - auto-belts and now airbags. BUT couple that with the theory of 'risk homeostasis' and we have these horrendous looking crashes. How safely would we drive if there were an 8" sharpened steel spike pointing at your head from the center of the steering wheel?
