The car numbers 8 or 7 doesn't have anything to do whether it is diecast or plastic. There are just 2 different decal setup. The 7 has Solsburg as the driver and the 8 has the Makinen decal setup. But yes the US plastic Hasbro ones are $25 and the Japanese Diecast Takara are $50. Just to clear up any confusion.

But really how often do I feel like pulling out my toy car and 'transforming' it just to show a friend that it's not just another model car?

this thread needs a bump just cause this thing is the coolest damn transformer ever created...
And probably one of the most complex I've ever had the chance to transform, dating back to old school stuff.
