Road racing a GC8 RS...
Anyone here have any experience road racing/time trialing/HPDEs with the GC8 Impreza RS? I formerly owned a 98 RS and I'm thinking about picking up another one to more or less gut and run atthe track. In theory it seems like a decent platform, particularly the light weight. I'm just curious if anyone has successfully set up the suspension and exectly what it takes (besides the generic "slap on some coilovers and it will run with Porsches!").
Also, switching topics, I would consider swapping in a WRX motor somewhere down the line. From what I've been reading around here the ***** is the wiring. Do any vendors offer a wiring service? Many Nissan SR20DET vendors will rewire those harnesses for a fee.

i have a 2000 rs
I had coilovers (chepo brand) on KYB AGX struts and they were way too bouncy for my daily driver taste. Even with the coilovers i still had tones of front end lift induced understear. I currently have stock springs and KYB GR2 struts witch is ferm and keep planted. I just ordered a set of whiteline flat out springs and the anti lift kit is also on its way, I will let you know how those help. I cant help but thinking that my main issue is crappy tires.
Ferther additions to my set up will be a thicker rear sway bar, solid end links all around and lower bars front and back.
As far as how it hadels now, my friends lumina z34 walks me down the road but cant hang in the curvs.
As sick as it is my sisters grand am gt always takes me on the inside.

I road race my GC8, and love every minute of it. Do lots of research before you chose what road to go down on suspension, but for the most part the following are necessary
Anti-Lift Kit (also called Caster Kit sometimes)
Front/rear swaybars (stock are tiny)
either a cage or more chassis braces than you can shake a stick at, the GC is not nearly as stiff as the new age models, it has alot of flex that needs to be addressed.
BBK, or atleast upgraded pads/rotors/lines/fluid. I use Stoptech Fronts, and Brembo rears (JDM STi 2pot rears are amazing also, the non brembo setup I mean)
And last but not least, more power, the stock engine just doesn't cut it. My car is swapped and then some, but I feel a stock STi swap with bolt-ons is PLENTY in a GC for a track car.
As far as coilovers? Ive gone through numerous (expensive) setups, and will be going back to springs and struts just for the simple fact that my car is extremely stiff as it is with all the solid mounts and pillowballs, and I feel that super stiff coilovers are really not aiding my car's handling at my local track, and I want the suspension to be able to soak up and comform to the track that I run. We'll see how that goes, its kind of an experiment really.
