Question on Subie Tester clutch
Last week, I picked up a 2005 Subaru Outback XT, with 250 hp turbo-charged 4 cyl. (I do car reviews for local paper)
I love the way this car steers, handles, seats are great, ride quality and interior are lovely... but the clutch is horrible. Surprisingly - for the most part, cars on manufacturer's press fleets are autos, or autos with clutchless shifting, the result being that I don't get to drive stick as much as I'd like. This is also the first Subaru I've tested. The clutch is low, and takes a lot of work to keep it engaged - both enthusiast friends that I let drive it said that it feels like it needs adjusting. Although the car shifts beautifully - I find that I have to ride the clutch a lot in order for it not to stall - is this a subie 'thing' or is it perhaps just this particular vehicle? Driving this car around downtown is not really pleasant.
Thanks in advance for any and all thoughts.

Have you tried comparing it to another Forester XT clutch action? I would take it back to the dealer and see if they are all like that. My Impreza clutch is easy to drive, mild pedal pressure, easily modulated engagement, etc.
It's possible that something is amiss on your particular clutch such as a defective clutch disc or a pressure plate or flywheel surface that isn't true (perpendicular to the crankshaft) that doesn't allow for smooth engagement.
