questing for 08
well, I signed up on this forum a few years ago hoping an impreza was immenient. School was a pain, and I was in the poor house.
A year and a half ago, my boat of a car died, and I was still short on cash and time to find a replacement. My parents would only lend me money to buy a car on the condition it was newer or new. They would not spring for a brand new 05 impreza RS/TS. I had an option to buy a used 02 RS but in auto. I felt it was time to learn manual, so I turned it down.
The dream of a WRX, sure I'd love one, and could probably get enough saved up to buy one with decent payments. I probably can't afford to maintain it on my pay and worry about mortgage on the house plus assorted costs of living.
I am more than happy with driving a non turboed impreza. I would even be honored to own one.
So, I am hatching a crazy plan.
I just hit 25 this year, and my insurance dropped by a staggering 1200$ annually.
At the time of the drop, I was paying 160 for the payments on my 03 civic and and 187 on insurance.
With the drop at 25 years, no claims, and a further 10% drop coming in january. I my insurance will be around 120-140$ a month. I have calculated (here in canada) that if I were to get around 11,000 for a trade in on my civic, and raise another 4k in the bank, my downpayment for a 08 2.5rs would be in the area of 13-16 k depending on the trade in.
I made an estimated based on the MSRP in canada and this would make my car payment 250ish give or take, plus insurance, and would only be about a 50$ increase in monthly car related payments.
So, by this time next year when the 08 imprezas are out, and financing hits 2.9% (as low as it gets in canada for subarus) So baring any disasterous events that would prevent me from raising 4+k in 10 months, I hope to be at the dealership, handing the keys to my civic over for the shiny new keys of a brand new 08 2.5 rs, a car and a dream I've been hoping to achieve for the last 7 years.

Sir-Knight, everyone on a budget should plan out financial expenditures like you do. Sometimes folks forget about things like the cost of insurance or planning for recurring costs like annual or semi-annual property taxes (at least here in the U.S.).
I hope you are able to realize your dream of owning an Impreza 2.5 in the near future.
