Got a question for you guys... How do you pump gas.. what I mean is when you pull up to the pump do you keep the car on, let the car run for a couple minutes THEN shut it off, or just shut it off the pump when you pull up?
Another thing that is happening to me when I pump gas, after I shut the car off and start pumping 93 octane in it, the pump will shut off, you know when it thinks the tank is "full" This is happening when I am on a 1/4 of a tank left and it does this at LEAST 5 times, ths has happened twice to me, only because I have only filled the tank up twice... but it was at two different pumps. Is there a problem with my gas tank or anything like that? I don't understand why the pump would be shutting off on me?
Thanks,
-Nigel

My moms minivan does this sometimes. Its how the end of the nozel vents inside the fuel neck. Sometimes you can only stick it halfway down the neck or it will produce symtoms like what yer asking about. Try playing with how you position it inside the filler neck next time. Oh yeah, NEVER leave your car running when you pump. I used to work at a gas station in highschool and we would always scream at people for doing that.

If you don't mind me asking why do not leave the car on... :-(
I did this the first time for about 1 minute then shut it off... I didn't want to just shut the car off because of the turbo.. so I let it run a tad to cool off..
Thanks,
-Nigel

If you want to cool down the turbo that is ok but do not leave the car on while pumping gas.
Also, make shure to tighten the gas cap on and klick it a few times. And if your parking lights won't shut off there is a switch on top of the steering columb.

You guys are rough! :-p
I was just wondering though how you guys do it... I pulled in today and waited around 3 minutes just sitting in my car..haha Since I have gotten my car before I get out for work I just sit in my car a couple minutes.. people come up to me and say "why do you just sit in your car?" I have to explain to them about the turbo and you can't just turn it off...

I see no reason to not just shut it off as soon as you pull up to the pump, it's not going to be sitting long enough at a gas station for you to worry about cooling down the turbo. And the reason you want to shut the car off while pumping gas is that it only takes one spark, like from a static discharge, to start a fire, and having a running car with the electrical system all fired up is just asking for trouble. Oh, and I'm in Oregon, the other state without self-service gas. And, no, we don't tip them. At least, I never have, and I've never seen anyone else do it, either.
Exactly, static energy. Any sort of a spark could ignite the fumes. It is a very dangerous idea, and in fact most pumps have a sticker on them that says shut off your car. I dont know why they just dont post a huge sign at stations that says shut your car off when you prmp. Those cases when people blow up a gas station or start a fire cause of static is sometimes related to not shutting the car off. More times though they get in and out of the car and cause static from rubbing on their seats. They dont discharge it before returning to the pump and the spark ignites the fumes. PLEASE, take the extra two seconds to shut your car off and pump your gas in safety. As far as letting the turbo spool down, 30-45 seconds is long enough.
So i was at the gas station the other day and i had just gone inside to pay. I came out and say this huge puddle around this cadilac, i was like damn it must be leaking something. When i looked around the corner there was a old man steadly still pumping while gas spilled eveywhere. I just said "hey" and pointed down and he was like oh ****. So i guess the lil stop pumping thing was not working.

That's when you go back in and tell the person behind the counter that the pump is broken and needs to be serviced. The auto-shut off obviously wasn't working as designed.
You also should not use a cell phone while pumping gas. The e-field generated by the phone can induce static into you and possibly cause a shock when you reach for the pump handle. But most of all, use common sense. You are dealing with a flammable liquid, whose vapors can ignite VERY easily. All it takes is that one little spark...BOOM!

turbo timer
install a turbo timer, set it for one minute. When you finnally get all the payment stuff setteled, you'r turbo has had time to get the heat sink out of it and the car will turn off buy itself. Then start pumping the go juice.

There was a network news story about this not long ago. Most occurances happen to women, who start a a pump with the thing to lock it pumping....then they go back into the car, get back out, touch the nozzle handle and blam...flames. Most have severe enough burns that they don't survive. Cloth seats and nylons in winter time equals lots of static electric generation.
To avoid this, don't use a cell phone. When you get out of the car, touch the pump metal, then pump the gas and stay there. If a flame ever does start, get out. Most people killed tried to pull the nozzle out of the car.
You can also reduce, or eliminate your turbo cool down by thinking ahead. If you're stopping soon, keep off the turbo. Drive very easily for the last 5 minutes. If you do this, you can shut it off immediately.

you guys are killing me here................this is all gonna be in caps so you see it very well......but it's not me yelling at you guys.....if you drive a WRX...you know i got your back no matter what
THERE IS NO REASON TO COOL DOWN YOUR TURBO..........THE NEW TURBOS DO NOT NEED TO BE COOLED DOWN BY IDLING YOUR ENGINE!!!!!!!!
THIS IS OLD SCHOOL TURBO STUFF.......NEW SCHOOL TURBO DOES NOT NEED TO IDLE COOL DOWN!!!!!
PLUS YOU'RE GONNA START THE CAR AGAIN IN A FEW MINUTES.......DO YOU REALLY THINK IT HAS COOLED AT ALL BY THE TIME THAT YOU PUMP YOUR GAS AND START YOUR CAR BACK UP?????
OR......IF YOU KNEW WHY YOU HAD TO COOL DOWN OLDER TURBOS YOU WOULD KNOW THAT IT WOULD TAKE A LOT MORE THAN 5 MINUTES FOR COKE TO START FORMING IN YOUR TURBO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i'm not trying to be a dick.........it's just that it's not neccessary and people for some reason still want to sit there and wait.........it makes no difference if you wait or not.........there is absolutly no reason to sit there. some people say that if you want to it can't hurt.....and that's true.........but you're not gaining anything from sitting there either........NOTHING AT ALL.....PERIOD!!!
now.........gas pumps don't always work correctly......try another station......if the pump shuts off then......try pulling the nozzle out a bit and see if that helps. it should...mine does the same thing at some stations!!!
later, riggs
