I YIM'd a legacy owner friend of mine to help you out. You most certainly can turbo your car, though I personally don't know what's involved.

The legacy forum here is, I think, sorta slow..you might try posting int he legacy forum on NASIOC. That is I think where most of the legacy guys hang out.

We'll see what we can do. Is it a 2.5, or an H6?

You can search around to see what guys did to the 98-01 2.5RS's (I've even seen someone turbo a 02 RS). They all basically have the same motor that is in your car (and mine too; I have researched this a little bit, actually).

The biggest thing, though, is that the engine is an open deck design, so the motor cannot handle too much boost. You are probably safe at about 6 PSI of boost, which may add 50 or so HP. Any more boost, and you would risk blowing up your engine. For reference, the stock WRX has about 14 PSI of boost (IIRC)

EDIT: Doh, I didn't even think of the posibility of an H6. Well, my comments only refer to the 2.5 liter engine.

Yeah the USDM wrx and STi are both semi-closed deck.

I don't know what the current JDM, EDM, UKDM, ADM, etc WRX and STi have, but there have been a few fully closed deck ej20's in the past. Maybe someone else can chime in here?
