New to Subaru, I have questions.
Alright, here we go.
I just got my hands on a mint 1978 Subaru Brat. It has 75000 miles and NO rust. It has the fun time seats in the bed and everything.
My question is...... Is there anyone on here that has put a modern engine in this thing, ITS SO SLOW. I was thinking about the 2.5rs motor (sorry, don't know the engine codes yet)
I have vast knowledge in hot rodding VW's, now I want to try my hands at this Brat. I have a Rabbit with 160hp and 210 ft/lbs @ the wheels, I take my fair share of ppl down at the local auto-x.
OH, another good idea, a poll.... What motor would you guys like to see me drop in this thing?

I am not to up on subaru history...sorry..
is that car AWD or what? I seem to remember 4wd. That may be your biggest stumbling block.
I am sure there are people that have run swaps in those....
check here.

the drivetrain layout of the old Brat is not the same as in the modern subarus.
So dropping in an engine would not suffice, you would need to fabricate a whole mounting system for the entire drivetrain! Besides that, I do not know about if the lengths of things even measure up (driveshafts for example)

Driveshafts are the easy part of the drivetrain setup. If I had to mount the whold drivetrai under there, I'd be worried about mounting everything square with the car. I have found a couple of sites since i posted the question, and I have found with minor mods a newer 5 speed can be mounted. Then that same site had pics of a 2.2 turbo Legacy motor I believe it was mounted in the Brat. I will continue my research, but thank you for the info ppl.

I believe if the 2.2 motor fits, anything else will fit
