new STi cars
hey
i dont know if any of you know, but Subaru is hard at work to make a new STi
As said by a senior source at Subaru, "Subaru has something quite special in the pipeline. We're now working on a 3.0-litre turbo Impreza for Japan and Europe that will generate in excess of 350bhp."
"Unfortunately, we're having teething problems with the transmission as the current WRX STi six-speed box isn't capable of handling the torque the engine produces." Several solutions are being investigated, with the most popular being to ask a company such as Getrag, which has much experience in building heavy-duty gearboxes, to work on the transmission.
But before you race down to your nearest dealer, bear in mind how long this is likely to take. Development of the car is said to be very complicated. Our source suggests we won't see the 3.0-litre turbo powering a Subaru until the next Impreza model change, due in 2007.
Also, out in Japan and Europe, is the Subaru Impreza WRX STi Spec C Limited. Its I4, 2.0L engine produces 335 hp @ 7000 rpm,
280 ft lb @ 3750 rpm, with 0-60 in 4.3 seconds and top speed of 160 mph (est).
No word on US launches yet.
Thought you might want to know if you already didn't

While it is an interesting rumor to hack at, I have to wonder why wouldn't the STI 6spd "handle" the torque of a 3.0L turbo? There has been cars producing 400bhp and has the 6spd just fine.

my guess is that the 3.0 liter motor will put out enough power that Subaru can't justify using the current STi six speed, for fear of too many of them getting broken. i certainly wouldn't complain about getting a Getrag tranny in a new STi. it's probably also for homologation requirements in some racing series or another.

subaru doesn't care about the current WRX transmission not being able to handle that engines power, I wonder why they care about the sti? I think they should get their priorities straight and make their current cars work the way they should before they go and try to make them faster...

the WRX isn't subaru's flagship model, the STi is. as such, it's going to get a whole lot more R&D, and better parts thrown at it. for most drivers, with relatively stock engines, the WRX 5 speed seems strong enough. keep in mind that it wasn't ever engineered to handle the power that the STi 6 speed was. also, to keep the price down here in the US, subaru had to cut some corners, and the tranny was where they decided to do so.
seriously though, i think that if Subaru is going to bring out a 3-liter car with a getrag tranny, that it's going to be specifically for homologation for some racing series. depening on the rules for such a series, Subaru might try and build the car stronger than they normally would to try and get arround some of the rules. for example, the easiest way to get arround a rule that bars you from replacing the vehicles original transmission would be to build the thing with a super beefy tranny that you'd want in a race car anyway. think about the Supras that came with Getrag transmissions. they only made something like 280hp off the showroom floor, which could easily have been handled by a lesser tranny, but they came with getrag units. why, so they could be tuned agressively, and raced in certain racing series.

STi Spec C has been out awhile now. I don't know if the engine produces different numbers, but I think it is a motorsport version of the WRX *like Evo RS* for tuning. Features some weightreduction and such.

to quote Uncle Si, "2007 mitsubishi evo will have 500bhp by then!!!" and the STi can pump out 700, or the buggatti will be pushin 1200... all this is possible but in the case of the evo and sti, unlikely for stock cars to be sold. you are askin a sub $35k car to be supplied with 500hp? that in my opinion will push the price tag well above the current price for either. also, it not goin to be one of those cars that you can use daily. those will drink a lot and it wont make sense to buy a car like that... might as well get yourself a vette or something like that for that price...
