Need help deciding which WRX to buy

Long time lurker, finally made an account since I'm a few weeks away from getting my first WRX.

I'm currently trying to decide between getting the 2009 WRX, and keeping it stock for awhile, or getting a 2008 WRX, but swapping out the suspension and making it stage 2. I haven't looked much into tuning since my original decision was to get a 2009, but lately the 2008 seems like a better idea. Can the stock 08 turbo handle the additional boost? Can I still pass smog on stage 2? Which one would get better MPGs? Any issues with each year that I should know about? Any tips or advice is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

the wide body on the 09 makes it worth the extra $ over an 08.
IMHO just get a new one, used performance turbo cars can be trouble if it was beat on by the previous owner.

I need the hatch, I'm an avid snowboarder, so I'm going to need the space. And the 09 WRXs don't have the widebody, or I would have definitely picked those. I can't afford a new one, I have a budget of around 20k. I've found a few 09's for that price, but they're few and far between.

09 for better mileage, mpg and the reliability of a stock car with 265 stock hp.

Would I just bring the car to any Subaru dealership and ask them to do an inspection? I'm actually looking for an 06/07 STI now, so obviously the chances of it being abused before me are high.
