I'm looking to buy a 2003 RS 5-speed (also in black) sometime in the next couple months. Every place I've seen mention invoice puts it at around 18,000 including destination. What'd you get with it fully loaded and is there a cheaper actual invoice than the advertised invoice you're referring to? Still doing some price and option researching around this way.

invoice
well i work at a subaru dealership so i got the perks. i paid 18700
total and had to pay another 500 because the car i wanted was in utah.the rs is kinda hard to find right now, especially in 03 because the docks were closed for so long.my car came with
short throw, fog lights, arm rest extension(a must for 5spd).everything else is standard, powereverything, cruise, tilt, keyless entry, etc.that car didnt have the spoiler though so i had to install it,it was another 350 but came painted from the factory. not a hard install, but was a little uneasy drilling into the trunk. invoice is what the dealer pays for the vehicle, msrp is what the manufacturer recommends the selling price to be.the dealership would usually make 1 to 2 grand on the car.my car msrp was a little over 20g.the only thing with my deal was since my car was in utah i had to pay another 500 for transport because they did a dealer trade.total came to 19,200.

Invoice price is not what dealer pays for it! If dealer was paying the invoice price then all of the dealers would have "going out of business" signs posted on every window. They make you think they pay invoice, I remember this sale pitch. The guy brought the invoice for the legacy and said give us like 300 over invoice. If the dealer was making $300 on car sale they would have to collecting donations on the side. I also have not seen a dealer that sells at MSRP because no one buys at that price.
Last car I bought, this august 2002 Legacy, MSRP $21700. I got it for $18,300 which was like 1.5k less the invoice.
Right now I'm in the middle of buying a WRX. The lowest price for 2003 I found was the invoice price. The lowest price I found for the 2002 WRX is 1k less the invoice price. I think I should stick with 2003 because I hear cluth problem was fixed.
So don't be fooled by Invoice, MSRP and all the BS. Email all the dealers around you within 50 miles. Tell them you need a quote by email and no standard reply. Tell them exactly what you need. For me it was any WRX Sedan with standard options except white. About 35% of the emails will be answered. Email them back and tell them the lowest price you received from other dealers. I think it's best not to specify the dealership's name. Trust me, you will get a good price this way.

i work at a subaru dealership and have seen the books.invoice is exactly what the dealer pays for the car.when they sell them at invoice or below,is because they get incentive money from subaru through max sales.more cars they can sell, bigger "spiff" so to say for the dealership. all they have to do is offer one or two cars at invoice or below, then they get people in the door.once its sells, people still come asking about it.whether or not they boost the so called invoice price, who knows, but its not done at my dealership.so you might want to do your homework before you talk.
