The VW as being unreliable surprises me...other than the MAF problems on the new cars, I thought they were rock solid. I guess they've really gone down hill.

the survey included responses from the owners of 810,000 vehicles. The survey was conducted in the spring of 2004 and covered 1997 to 2004 models. The ratings are based on the number of problems per 100 vehicles in the survey.

My family used to own Golf's and a Eurovan which we had untill it had 178k on the clock and didn't ever have a problem with it and only sold it becuase we needed a 4WD for a dirt road to the family cabin.

There are a few people I know who have had random problems with their Jettas around me.
I just got Honda's 2004 anual report and their was a picture of one of their concept cars to be released in 2005 called a SUT and it is the spitting image of the Baja. Copy cat *****!

It's a small tube after the air box and before the intake pipe to the manifold. They have been known to go bad, especially with open element filter intakes. Bosch had quite a bad batch of them. They look something like this:

Vw's problem since 95 is that all of there cars are made in mexico or south america. Most all newer jetta's have wiring problems, My friends jetta's power windows never worked even when fixed, it would happen again. I have no Idea why this happens to them but they have electric problems, and are overal temermental cars. My friends Audi S4 throw's CELs every other day for no apperant reason. New Jetta's and GTI's are just poor quality, probalby because they cheap out on stuff and get People who live in third world countries to build the cars for dirt cheap to make a huge profit off a car. GTI's are around 20 thousand. New R32, 32K no thank you.

Coincidentally...
...the Impreza also tops the NHTSA 2004 lemon list:
http://www.lemonlaw.com/lemonlist.html
Evidently because of ppl abusing their cars, then trying to get them fixed under warranty. When the warranty claim is denied, they lemon-law it...

WAS AT THE LOCAL TRACK ON RUN WHAT YOU BRUNG NIGHT. LINED UP AGAINST AN SRT-4. LIGHT TURNED GREEN. I ACCELERATED TRYING TO GET A HOLESHOT. I HEARD A LOUD BANGING NOISE. SOUNDED LIKE THE TRANSMISSION/CLUTCH GIVING UP. THE SRT-4 WAS WAY AHEAD OF ME. I SHIFTED THROUGH THE GEARS AND WAS NOT ABLE TO CATCH UP. THAT SRT-4 WAS FAST. THE LACK OF POWER IN MY STI REALLY DISHONORED MY FAMILY. IT FORCED ME TO BE HUMILIATED. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT THE CAR WAS NORMAL AND TO EXPECT TO BE OUTMATCHED BY CARS LIKE THE DODGE SRT-4. THEY NEVER DID TELL ME ANYTHING ABOUT THE TRANSMISSION/CLUTCH NOISE.*AK
