I just bought an 04 WRX
I just picked up an 04 WRX last sunday and have been ichin to do something to it already. But I have to this whole break in thing... I'm wondering when the break in process is over? The manual say 1k, can someone tell me it's sooner than that... I've been drivin it everywhere just to hit 1k already... Also I'm new to subaru's don't really know to much about it except it's a fun *** ride(even if I haven't gone past 4k RPM) So hopefully you guys won't get to irritated with some of my questions... Cause I'm gonna be on this thing a lot...
Also what do you guys recomend I do first? This guy at subaru said to get a rear sway bar and some springs... I think the suspension is already good, I have never ridin in a car that grips that road like my subi... He said it's even better... Also I heard that I should get an oil change after the break in is this true? okay I'll check back tomorrow... Also I'm in So.CA so if anyone from So.CA can help me find some shops or help with some advise would be helpful thanks....

if the manual says 1K, take it easy up to 1K.
i changed my oil 3 times during break-in, first @ 250miles, second @ 500miles, and third on 1K miles. reason for this is when the engine is new, all the metal have groves (some may argue that today's engineering is so advacen that those groves are not there, but i'd say be on the safe side), when breaking-in the engine... those groves gets grind into each other and some will shred off the metal surface and falls into the oil pan. some gets filtered, some just stick in the pan... so are so small it might gets recycle back into the engine.
so changing oil a few times during break-in is good for you.

Well I'm at like around 800 close to 900 and I've taken it to like 5000RPM. I ran it kinda hard today tho I hope that isn't that bad... I just couldn't help myself. I plan on changing the oil on Fri when I go to the dealership for a meet... Thanks for the advise. I just hope that I didn't mess anything up running it hard like that.

Your location says you're from CA..where?
I didn't do my first oil change till 3k mi. Car is running fine.
I've heard that many people recommend you don't mod the car until about 10k miles. I would wait anyway - get used to how the car handles and performs before you go changing stuff around. Driving the car for a while will give you a better idea of what to do first when you're ready.

Thanks sonic, yeah I think I'm just gonna go with a stiffer suspension and some springs and maybe some rims... I do still plan on getting an oil change on friday just to be on the safe side.

Car Info: want a WRX
dont worry bout it if you go over 4k a few times...an uppipe should be the first mod....its very restrictive...wait till like 1.5k to do that...the best companies are vishnu, perrin and aps...im sure some people may have others to add...good luck bro

Hey Scooby fans,
I too just got a 04 WRX wagon that I am still breaking in. I have a couple of questions. A buddy says that I should break in the engine all though the rev range, similar reasons to what Quad said. Does that mean close to red line?? I am not sure if that is okay or not. He also said to go with all synthetic oils, transmission fuild, brake, etc. does this make a difference?
Okay...up pipe, any approx. cost installed?
Thanks

across the rpm range doesn't mean you max your rev, i believe the wrx's manual says don't take it over 4K RPM. what your friend meant was not to constantly running at the same rpm...
meaning if you are doing highway driving and have it on 5th gear and rpm stays around, per say, 3,000rpm. don't stay on it for too long. slow down to 2,500rpm or speed up to 3,500rpm from time to time. simply you just need to run the engine on variable rpms instead of the same rpms all the time. plus don't run your new car over extensive amount of time, a good measure is give your car a 20-30mins break after 2 hours or so of driving.
p.s. when i first got my car, i took it to a large empty parking lot and break it in there on weekend. i variabled the gears and rpms. i would take it up to 4K on first gear, shift to 4th gear and take the rpm higher, take it to six gear for a while, downshift back to second, shift to 5th... etc. you get the point. hope this helps.
