Sorry to the mods if this is in the wrong forum...But I was thinking what it takes to build a Go Kart. I'm not talkin bout no 40 mph karts but maybe the Scandia or Golfland Sunsplash ones. Just curious on who has attempted this and success, failure, stories, etc

ever since the yamaha YZ250F motocross bike(five titanium valves, single cylinder four stroke) came out, i've wanted a shifter cart with an engine from one. i used to have a 250F, and it was a beastie.
i second the thought of building it yourself as long as you've got access to tube bending and welding equipment. you'll learn more about chassis engineering and dynamics than you probably ever wanted to know.

My kids used to race WKA karts. On a 1/5th mile oval they were going 55mph, in 5 hp Briggs and Stratton, offset chassis, and thats with the smallest restrictor plate for the 8 year olds. Very serious business once you start. Do a search and you'll get a never ending supply of manufacturers, forums, engine builders, chassis builders, tracks, personal sites, go fast bits, ect.
We had 2 karts, 3 methanol engines all built to the maximum the rules allow, 20 spare tires mounted, 20-30 final drive sprockets to match track conditions, 7 multi-plate clutches all blue printed, 10-15 driver sprockets, tons of extras in case of "contact" or those racing deals.
My oldest son got 4th in points in two different divisions his first year, and second in Sprints his second year. My youngest won the Rookie Sprints Championship his first season driving. He is a hell of a driver, fearless yet a fabulous tactician. I owe him another season sometime before he gets too old. We had to quit racing because it was just too expensive to stay competive, and parents and adult drivers started to take it all too seriously.
