Japanese laws says that a company can't buy more then 27% of Subaru without the Japanese govs approval. The reason is that with 28% of the company it would give GM enough stock to be a major share holder. A major share holder is given veto rights on company decisions as well as a few other small things. I read about the merger when I lived in Japan. I moved over there right before GM bought into Subaru.
Diamler/Chrysler had to get approval before they could take over Mitsubishi. At the time though the Japanese gov had just caught Mitsubishi covering up known defects for the last ten years so they were more then happy to approve that deal.

Lets hope they don't go the way of the small SUVs now and make damn near the entire outside of it from unpainted plain black ABS plastic. When I buy a vehicle I like to know that some of the money went to them actually having painted the damn thing and not just 1/3 of it. Then again my RS's paint is so damn thing it might as well be not there.
