About a week ago, I had my Impreza in a local shop nearby me to get the timing belt done and was able to pick it up the same day. A few days later, I was working on my engine and noticed a big gap at the top of the timing belt cover. It was missing the upper timing belt cover gasket ($20.00 piece). So I took my car back to the mechanic and showed him. I said, “How come the gasket was taken off but a new one was never put back on?” He said, “Well, I didn’t have any in stock so I just didn’t put one back on.” Does that sound retarded to anyone else??? Now I have to have him tear apart my car to put one back in so I don’t get any leaks in the timing belt area. Will having it “gasketless” for about a week ruin anything, like the timing belt??

i was trying to remember what gasket you were talking about, b/c the side covers don't have one. but then i remembered the middle one has that funky rubber one. the bottom also has one, and sometimes doing t/b's on 2.5s we actually leave these off. they tend to get oil soaked and have the chance to jump into the belt/idler pulley. don't laugh, it happened to my friend. lucky for him he worked at the shop at the time.
but to answer your ? no it should hurt anything to have that out for a little bit. if you were out in dirty sandy conditions, i would bo worried. basically it keeps any dirt out, so it doesn't get on the pulleys and belt.
as for the mechanic... ummm... duh.
haha. this gasket is reuseable! it just fits on to the t/b cover. usually it will stick to the engine block, you just have to know its there and take it off, reinstall on the cover.
