Catch 22...
Hey guys, new to the forum. I've been wanting to get a wrx for some time now, and finally my parents agreed to buying me a car after doing really well freshman year of college and doing some other good things. The only catch is they will not let me get a stickshift no matter what. Now i know the wrx is turbo, and to get one in auto seems stupid. I don't know what to do... this is killing me .....
i know some would die to be in my situation but it just pisses me off a little. do you guys have any input on my situation, or any advice to convince my parents. lol thanks.

Manual will save them $900.
Is there a reason for them to say no to manuals? LIke that they cant drive them and would use the car sometimes themselves? Or is it something else?
Me, I would just hold out until they changed there minds or until I could purchase a car myself, even if its not a WRX... (say, a used mid 90's Impreza coupe instead
)

I was in the same boat. My parents bought me an automatic wrx for college graduation. I'm not complaining since they are paying for the car and insurance. I figured that I'll get a stick when i can afford one with my own money. 4EAT is still pretty fun to drive, tho it DOES sound stupid, and I get weird looks when I tell people my car's auto. haha.

well, my parents say its not safe and its a hassle to drive. they say its all fun and games until you have to drive in traffic, uphill, bad weather..etc. plus, my good friend died in a acura integra type R (stick of course) 2 years ago... they never mentioned that but i think thats part of the reason.
all in all, its not my money. who am i kidding to decide on what i get.. i tried but failed
but i'm still getting a WRX!!!!!

A stick is only a "hassle" to drive while you are learning it. I've been driving a manual since I learned to drive, and now I shift without even thinking about it. Sure, when you are stuck in traffic, it can kinda suck, but it's well worth it. Sounds to me like your parents probably don't even know how to drive a stick, or don't remember what it was like to drive one. And I'm sorry to hear about your friend, but I'm willing to bet that the type of transmission he had nothing to do with the accident. Frankly, i think a manual makes you a better driver, because it makes you pay more attention to the car and what it's doing.
I've been wanting an impreza since the the GC8, took me 3 years of convincing, to finally get an 03 wrx. they have been pretty happy with the choice since i didnt pick a bimmer, which a lot of my friends drives. palo alto, figures...
but, stick shift is one thing that they'll never budge. my mom tried to refrain me from driving altogehter, she got in a major accident in college, and she doesnt want the same to happen to be. I've never had my own car, and have to go through a long interview process before i can borrow her car. so it's a big step to get a car from her.
my dad knows that i will get better control of the car with MT, and he thinks i'd go racing with it, or try doing clutch drops and drifting like initial D (he watched that show with me)
after the years, it came down to a take it or leave it deal with an auto wrx, or even a car at all.
i agree parents have weird logics on MTs. just keep asking till they day u buy the car, even have the dealer put in a couple words, as last ditch effort. good luck.

Also, where you live, how many times do you actually get stuck in traffic and how many uphill roads to you pass through everyday?
One last thing...
If you look at the ads looking for used subaru WRXs, you'll notice that a lot of people want a manual tranny, specially the young kids that like to mod their cars. You'll probably have a better chance of selling it.

Well my mom is upset.
She found out that while her Automatic Legacy GT constantly shifts between 3rd and 4th going up and down I-80 between Truckee and Sacramento, a 5-speed Subaru with the same engine can just sit in 5th gear the whole way...
Heck, I even had her test drive an '03 Forester 5-speed so she can see the difference... She said right away "OMG", LOL! Too bad that my dad cant drive stick (he lacks anything in the way of driving skills - my family is odd)
Anyhow, I think you need to inform your parents that they have an unfounded prejeduce (in the nicest way possible) or at least find another family member or person who you can have talk to them about this.
I personally find driving a manual tranny, ESPECIALLY in traffic, to be far safer. I get the car in the gear it needs to be in before an automatic transmition would be able to react to that situation... If they think it is "unsafe" because you either go faster or have to do more to drive, then they simply need to do more ressearch on the subject.
