IIRC, the car and driver article mentioned in a foot note that they got their time by side stepping the clutch.

it flooring the car while the clutch is in, then jus moving ur foot to the side, allowing the clutch to completly pop out, VERY fast...the best way to launch a car for speed, the WORST for your tranny...

Yeah, side stepping is great for two things. Fast launches, and blowing up your trans....
