You shouldnt pull anything of that much weight with a wrx.

Why not get a better quality used boat for less $ (bayliners are JUNK) & and something cheep to pull it with.

That's an rigid inflatable and probably weighs less than 1000lbs and certainly much less than 2000lbs. Also the car is probably not a sport tuned turbo model but a non smogged 2.0L which would make for a more managable towing vehicle in the low end grunt department.

Nothing wrong with towing just overloading.

just a warning, i wouldn't tow much with an old 4runner either. up to 95 they only had a 3.0L v6 which put out around 150 hp and 180 ft-lbs of torque. aka 3.slow

for light weight towing they work, just struggle up the hills and stuff. i would still suggest something a little more powerful. i towed a honda with one once and it was struggling, definatly not made to tow that much

Car Info: 02 Impreza WRX sedan
My MY02 WRX Owner's Manual states that both the 5MT and the 4EAT can haul up to 1000 lbs maximum, or 2000 lbs maximum if the trailer is equipped with electric brakes. This total towing capacity must include the weight of both the cargo and the trailer. The 4EAT is also not recommended for towing up long grades during hot weather as it will cause the tranny fluid to exceed operating temperature because of the heat generated by pulling the extra weight.

I would not exceed these maximum rated towing capacities unless I was just hauling the boat around the block, or have given some serious thought to beefing up the drivetrain with things like synthetic gear lube, synthetic grease in the wheel bearings, heavy-duty clutch, upgraded brakes, larger radiator, a small engine oil cooler, and maybe even a few gussets in the rear sub-frame of the car. It's just way too much trouble to figure out what needs upgrading and then implementing it.

The Impreza is a compact car and wasn't designed to haul that much mass behind it. My friend knew that down the road he'd be hauling things like a trailer or a boat and bought a GMC pickup with the Duramax turbo diesel and Allison transmission. The full-length frame under that bad boy looks really massive compared with what we have under our Imprezas (front and rear sub-frames joined to a unibody).

Not only that the SOA officially don't recommend towing with the 02 WRX despite what it says in the manual. Somewhere I have an email from them to prove it. I don't think they have a good reason for this except that they didn't specify the wiring harness for the WRX that is in the Outback Sport and TS of the same year. They changed their minds in 03 I believe. Just thought I'd add some towing trivia.

Weight

You are all right and I totally agree, do not tow with the WRX, very bad idea.

It not the HP or gearing you really have to worry about its the fact that the boat almost weighs as much as the car. That means in normal driving or on the hwy you would find that the boat would be pulling you not the other way around.

Before I bought the WRX I had a 97 Ford Ranger. One time I really needed allot of rock for my back yard. So I rented a heavy duty trailer and had it loaded up to the max. The Ranger had no problems pulling the load but when I went to make a turn or hit a bump in the road I found my self desperately trying to keep the truck on the road because the trailer was pushing me all over the place. Needless to say I learned my lesson.

And on a side note you probably would not be able to stop the car without frying your breaks. I have found that the standard breaks on the car are weak even for the little racing around I do.

At the end of the day... the bottom line comes to this... are you willing to strap that thing to the back of you subaru... your baby? risking, getting pushed into toher vehicles, off cliffs... gettin pulled down hills (demonstrated in the video), tearing the poor car in half?

When it's going to cost you probably less than a benjamin to rent a Silverado for the day from U-Haul, or enterprise or something?

What's it going to be?
