I've towed a small utility trailer but would never tow more than that. With approx 1,000 lbs, it feels like a full size truck is pushing you when you try to stop.
I think it's more of a brake/ safety issue, than it being a problem of getting it moving. Power isn't an issue, either, but I'd worry about ripping the car in half with that much weight.
I don't think the hitch is even rated above 1500lbs, but I could be wrong.
I'd say definately not recommended and probably illegal. If its a short distance (less than a mile) on the flat private street you'll probably be ok so long as the trailer is well balanced. But going any distance up grades on public streets in traffic like you might to get to a lake you are asking for trouble.
There are several issues to consider.
1. the WRX does not have a lot of low end torque so you'll be stressing the engine. Its gearing is not oriented for towing so it will be hard to manage
2. the unibody construction and suspension are not designed to safely tow more then the rated amount. If you overload it you might damage the frame
3. The towbar frames made for the WRX are class 1 which are only rated up to 2000 lbs. They have the smaller reciever (1.25 inch I think). If it's overloaded it may fail under any unexpected stress.
4. The maximum is a maximum and you probably shouldn't tow a load much over half that rating to be safe. The load weight includes the trailer. There's also the tongue weight to consider.
5. To tow over 1500lb you will need to add a trailer braking system. (by law in CA) You probably should consider one for any load over 1000lb. Not really relavent but good to know.
Bottom line - If you want to tow something that big you should get a more suitable vehicle.

Don't even try it, please. Honestly, buy yourself a used full-sized pick-up to haul the tupperware so you don't ruin the little WRX. I have a boat and know that you need to consider the weight of the boat and trailer, driving on the freeway in crosswinds and hauling your boat and trailer safely in and out of slippery launch ramps. You want surplus power available...
