Blew up an EJ22
Blew up an EJ22
My nephew blew the motor in his EJ22. It overheated on the highway, he kept going until it died and now it had all kinds of head and bottom end noise. Its cooked.
We combed the local junkyards but cant find a motor. Is there a Subie shop that would do a lot of swaps or a big Subie junkyard somewhere with tons of EJ22 motors sitting around that we could have shipped from?
What are his options in terms of motors? I assume the 2.5, even with the tranny, would have different mounts and ECU and drivetrain, right? If it was a common swap I havent heard of them. Any other motor choices?
We're in Rockland/Orange (NY) and north NJ area. Thanks.

You should take a look on ebay. There are always powertrain packages for sale. Just go into the parts section in ebaymotors and do a search for wrx or the motor code and you should geta few listings. I dont know about shops around that area though.

well if you want to take a drive to south PA there is octagon spares that most have 50 engines and 50 trannys along with 20 assorted subys laying around and he has everything needed to do the 2.2 to 2.5 swap if he is willing to change the entire wiring harness
but i would just put the 2.2 of another suby back in because the average labor is 50-60 hour for someone that has done this swap before
they also warrenty the engine for 30 days not covering labor
heck just got my 2.2 for $1k with 60k miles included MAF and ECU
the number is (717) 244-5279 if you get real pressed for options

I found one in a huge Subie junkyard in CT. Thanks!

So how much did you end up paying and what did you get? Octagon Spares has sold a VA owner a couple bad motors and refused to refund his money. On the third attempt they sold him a good motor. If you can't see if running in the car before they pull it then I wouldn't buy from them.
They had two motors with 50-59k for $1g and a 100k motor for $800. Supposedly a 90 day warranty and all motors are tested, hopefully we wont have to find out if they warranty it. Motor will go in sometime this week.
They had a very low miles WRX motor but wanted something like $4g for it. Ouch.

they said 30 day and they only cover parts but if the motor is blown they will give me another
wow 4k for a wrx motor i wonder what they will want when they get a STI

Well the WRX motor had like 250 miles on it. The temp-tags sticker cutout was still in the back window, the tires still had the little dimples on them, and when I opened the door it still had that "new car" smell. It was tboned in the pass side.
Sucks for him.
