This is very odd, and very cool if true.

Tokyo auto show promo site for Subaru cars:

This shows the B9 and R series conceptr cars. I think you might be reffering to the R1 concept (fugly).

Are you sure it was a 2004, not one of the old 2-door WRXs?

well as me and friends have been saying, it looks like Subaru really needs to get a small car to base their Rally program on. The Impreza is getting a little big and old to be there.

Every rally car is at or near the minimum weight requirement, so the Impreza is not heavier then any other rally car in that regard. Its also no taller then any other rally car out there. There are also very strict width requriements, so it is just as stable side-to-side as other rally cars.

About the only way in which the Impreza is bigger then other rally cars is its wheelbase. All that really does is make it much more stable in high speed long straights, and slightly less nimble in slow corners.

So, when an Impreza whips around a corner, it has to move more volume, but not more weight. This doesn't affect speed as much as it affect driver style.

The only way in which the Impreza is at a disadvantage right now is power. The other teams have found ways to generate ~20hp more then the Impreza. But, SWRT is introducing a new motor at either Mexico or New Zealand.
