2.5 RS Impreza NEED HELP
I am a die hard rally fan (congrats to Solberg on the Cyprus rally) and am looking to buy the 2.5 RS (1997-2000). I was wondering if someone here can enlighten me on the whole 1997-2000 Impreza line. I am not sure about the 97-00 line, and here is what I think and please correct me if I am wrong. The coupe that is made is a 2.5 RS cause the sedan version is designated L... meaning they produced a consumer Impreza L and an enthusiast 2.5 RS. Thus any coupe is a 2.5 RS correct? Of the 2.5 RS models, is there any particular model year which is best to get? Any feed back is very much appreciated.

Look on page 3 of the Faqs link in this section.
GM*=coupe Impreza
GC*=sedan Impreza
GF*=wagon Impreza
G*8=Impreza w/ EJ20
G*6=Impreza w/EJ25
G*4=Impreza w/EJ22 (not 22b)
G*2=Impreza w/EJ18 liter
New style:
GD*= Impreza sedan
GG*= Impreza wagon
G*A= EJ20
GDB= EJ20 STi (no GGB, since there is no STi wagon)
G*6= EJ25

Actually, the RS w/ the EJ25 engine was available as a sedan in 2000 and 2001. Previous to 2000, the RS was available only as a 2 door. I would avoid the MY99 due to the problems it had w/ it's MAF
97-98 had a DOHC w/ MAF sensor
99 SOHC w/ a MAF sensor - Probably the one to avoid because least amount of engine mods are available because of the weak MAF.
00-01 SOHC MAP, 4 door available in RS trim.

SOA has also since changed the MAF used in the 99 model cars which hasn't had the issues the orignal version had. If your going with a turbo later on the DOHC 98 model has had problems with blowing headgaskets. The 2000 and up use a higher compression ratio and require a voltage clamp.
