'11 WRX - Sunroof Shattered!

So today I went snowboarding up the mountain. (first time this season). First time this car has seen much snow. It was about 25 degrees, my car has seen one 25 degree night before.

I opened the insider slider (whatever you call that) just to look out at something. I started to comment oh look ice even formed and started to crack.... then I looked and realized the sunroof was shattered. :eek2:

Has anyone ever seen this before??? As you can see by the cracks, theres no impact. I was in a parking lot with no trees.... I had to drive 45 miles home like that.

Then Tuesday (after the rain lets up) drive to subaru and try to convince them that there was no impact. I took some video and more pics.

No sure where to start with this one....

I guess... 25 degrees isn't cold though. It sat through one 25 degree night, just not with the snow

Not the first time Ive heard this happened. Heard couple of stories of how the sunroof just shattered while someone was driving....... You can look up more threads on it. I honestly do not know whats going on. Maybe its cheap glass and they need to use better quality?

I just spoke to the manager, he said he talked to the rep and the rep said no. He wouldn't give me the reps number but gave me SOAs number

I just spoke with Gretchen at SOA, she didn't call me back yesterday as promised. She said they will be contacting me back today. I advised her if she does not I will be contacting the NHTSA. Apparently SOA has spotted my couple threads on the interwebs about this because she was aware of them.

Did you happen to crank up the heater when you first sat in the car? Sudden changes of and ambient temperatures can cause glass to crack... Thats all I can think of.. or some intense body roll. Sorry to hear about this my friend!

I did turn the heater on, but the ceiling piece was closed (whatever you call that) and the car had to warm up and the doors were open so it would have taken a while to heat up

I'll update when they contact me next. I'd love to post that Subaru got it fixed and I will remain a Subi customer! As much as I have loved both my cars... if I have to pay $600 to get this fixed... I won't be happy. Here's to good wishes eh?

This makes me concerned about buying my next Subaru... I am currently in the market for a 05+ legacy gt limited or Forester XT limited...

I am really curious to see how Subaru handles this...

Sorry, I forgot to update this.

SOA denied the claim, and the local dealership is charging me $700

F*** YOU SUBARU!

Well, it seems like this is a moonroof thing and not a Subaru thing...

Exploding Sunroofs! - Car Forums - Edmunds

When glass gets really cold it can become brittle and break.

This doesn't deter me from buying a Subaru... But it does make me weary if I do decide to get a car with a moonroof (I love moonroofs) and take it into cold conditions.

i see moonroofs/ sunroofs as a waist of money if you have to pay extra, no point in paying extra for something that seems to break in this case
