I believe that it does 5.4 0-60/14.1 in the 1/4. If it behaves like the 2.5 in the XT, it'll be running out of steam well before the end of the 1/4 mile.

I'm curious if the transmission from the '02-'05 carried over into the '06. If it did, those taller gears may hurt acceleration a bit. Also, there's the question over the transmission's ability to handle the extra torque.

Transmission carried over, buts its reinforced somehow. Im sure someone here knows the details, but it should handle typical mods easily this time around. I'm not sure about gearing changes if any, but I doubt it.

Bump that sh*t!

Very useful information...

05_WRX_420 - Are you going to dyno it anytime soon? How does the boost hold in the higher RPM? Any plans on future mods? Also, whats your engine speed while cruising at like 65-70?

Gilmore25 - To be honest with you, I bet youre right.. I bet these cars put down at least 240-260 to the crank... But are published lower... Think about it... catless uppipe, half a liter of extra displacement, cmon now 3 hp is NOT the gain to be expected... I think Subaru kept the numbers down with conservative tunes (your post suggests its still mad powerful) and even on top of that, underrated the car. I really dont think they want to lose any potential customers of the STi to the WRX.

Keep the info coming guys!

Lightbulb Some 2006WRX 2.5 Stats

I haven't taken it past 4K, I still need to break it in(400 miles left). The manuel lists top speed for each gear is:
1st 33 mph
2nd 50
3rd 68
4th 114
I have look at my RPMs through different speeds:
@2500 70 mph in 5th
@3500 90mph in 5th
@4000 104mph in 5th

I plan to mod it as much as I can without any major engine work. I was also checking egine part numbers to see if its the STI block.

WRX 2.5 is EJ255 Redline @6500rpm compression ratio 8.4:1
STI is EJ257 " @7000rpm " " " 8.2:1

I think maybe its just the heads are different. Hopefully someone out there can figure out how to make it rev to 7K like the STI.

I didn't see how fast I was going in 1st, but in second I hit fuel cutout between 68-70, and in third 95, fourth was too long

Only 11.5lb/boost? So you should be able to adjust the wastegate or add a boost controller to safely up the boost to 13.5-14.5, just like the 02-05 WRX's. This EJ255 engine should be able to handle that pretty easily.

What do you think 1lb/boost = in HP on the EJ255 If you only have cat back exhuast?

WOW thats impressive... meaning you could get awesome mileage on the fwy... doesnt say much for acceleration though...

All the above posts are making VERY clear sense to me... Ive been predicting this ever since I heard about the 2.5 making it into the WRX..

It is UNDERTUNED... The more you guys post the facts, the more it confirms my speculation...

They dont want to lose potential STi customers to the WRX for thousands less...

So...
They tune the ecu VERY conservatively
Keep the boost pressures low
and publish low numbers

I cant wait for someone to hit a dyno and show me 240-260 @ the crank...

Just imagine what COBB will put out for this monster

Thumbs up

The 06 WRX owerners manuel says that top speed in 4th is 114mph, but today I hit 125mph in 4th @6500rpm. I also did some top speed cat & mouse with a 05 STI on the highway today. I kept up with him pretty well considering he has 300HP. I was stock and he had some work done on his STI. After 4K all the action begins! I cant wait to start the mods!

The power potential may be there for the '06 WRX, but remember that there's a lot more to the STi than power...transmission, brakes, aerodynamics, suspension, interior. I was debating whether to get an '06 WRX or STi. In the end, I figured that getting the WRX to perform in every way like the STi would be to costly and would void the warranty. Insurance would have been cheaper, and I really liked the utility of the wagon, though.

So this change to the tranny on the WRX, is it only the syncros, or better internals overall? Anyone feel a diff with this 06 compared to previous years? Thanks
