WRX STI OCTANE in CA.?
They say to use 94 but the only octane I can find is 91 what do other owners of wrx sti's use in california and how much of whatever it is do you put in the tank with the 91 gas. If I didn't word this right it is because I am asking this for my husband. I'm sure you'll be able to figure out what I mean! Thanks Debbie

well i dont have an STi, but i own a 04 WRX which is the same car manual as the STi and it says for the 04 STi that u use 93 octance or higher and if 93 octane isnt available, use 91. so 91 will be just fine... also where i live, there is a 76 gas station that sells racing fuel, which is 100 octane and costs about $4.50 a gallon.
using 91 for STi will b fine, but if i had the STi i would often add the 100 octane.

I broke the 1K mark a few days ago and mine pings on Cali's 91. I don't see anyway to avoid that except mixing 76's 100 race fuel with 91 or get the reflash.
Mine does still power through the pinging but the sound is still disconcerting...sp?
So if you run WOT you'll most likely get pinging but at 1/2 gas, you should not get pings.
Good luck

Any reason why you don't want to get the reflash?

Nut,
Did you experience any loss of power? I'm wondering about that. I just came back from a lunch drive and it pinged again, but not too much. Just between 4-5K.
So after you had yours reflashed, the pings went away at WOT?

My other friend with a STi told me he didn't feel any power differences before and after the reflash.
As far as I am concern, reflash is a must. Detonation must be avoid at all cost.

The reflash we are talking about is Subaru reporgramming the stock ECU in the STi to allow it to run on 91 octane gas without any detonation. Reflash = reset/reprogramming/reburn a new chip......whatever you like to call it. It is a free service from Subaru. It is like a recall, but since not every STi ping, so they are not recalling all the cars. If your STi ping, take it to the dealer to get the free reflash. It is the easiest and cheapest way to get rid of the pinging. As far as I know, it doesn't effect the power.

It sure is a pain in the butt if you have to put gas from a can everytime you fill up in a street car.
