But, the only type of tranny I would like more than a manual is a sequential. The essence of quick shifting. No short throw can shift faster.
Maybe we can all encourage Subaru to use their "rally inspired" technology to design a sequential tranny. Tim

C'mon man...an automatic in the Sti??? Seriously though, slush-boxes majorly **** me off. I hate driving them. And that sport-shift garbage is even worse. I just drove a rental BMW 330xi (my friend's 540i was in for an oil change) with an automatic (sport shift). That is seriously the biggest joke I have ever driven in my LIFE! The 330 is a very sporty car and has lots of "go juice" but with the auto, it was completely lifeless and "disconnected." The sportshift feature is hilarious; you click the lever forward to shift, and then 4 seconds later (after the engine bounces off redline for awhile) it finally decides to shift. And don't bother trying a downshift, it will literally put you into the dashboard since it can't heel-and-toe like any "normal" driver can. It's simply a tool for old people to feel 40 years younger. If you want to wreck a perfectly good car, throw a slush-box in it...
By the way, you will ALWAYS get better fuel economy with a clutch than you EVER can with a torque converter. I've noticed they've seriously started manipulating the sticker numbers to get more people to buy automatics. More marketing genius, I guess...
On the other hand, the Audi CVTs and the Mercedes hydraulic-shift systems really rock!
The 540i is, hands-down, the BEST car I have ever driven. I'm hoping to at least keep pace with my new Sti on the race track...
