The current 02-03 WRX (assuming stock sized 16" tires), will do about 2300-2400 rpm @ 60 mph.
I do not have the gear ratio for the new STi 6 speed, so I don't know what rpm it would be at @ 60mph.
A previous thread claimed the 02-03 EDM Sti should run at the same RPM in 6th as a USDM WRX in 5th - about 2500 or whatever for 60mph (75mph is 3k).
If you stick a 6MT in a USDM WRX it'll run a few hundred RPM higher in 6th at speed than with the OEM 5th.
I think the JDM STi had closer-ratio 5th and 6th gears than the international export model, so it would run a bit higher.

Using an RPM calculator, I printed out a sheet for the STi. It looks like about 2500rpm.
At 80mph the STi is at 3300rpm as are the E46 M3 and the current WRX with 215/45-17 tires. The EVO in top gear would be at 3600rpm. My 1996 Miata is at 4000rpm (noisy!). An Acura 3.2 TL lugs along at under 2300rpm.
Purely looking at specs without getting in the car, it looks like 0.720 for the 6th gear would have been a bit nicer and make the shift from 5th to 6th at 7k redline drop the revs to 5k like the 2-3, 3-4, and 4-5 shifts. As it is, shifting at 7k from 5th to 6th ends up at 5500. Dropping 6th to 0.720 would also bring 80mph down from 3300 to 3150 rpm which might be nicer on the highway. I'm sure I'll live with it
.
Redline on the dash is 7000 rpm. Does anyone happen to know where the rev limiter kicks in? It could come in handy at the autocross to get just a little more out of a gear. Given the gearing I'm almost wondering if I'll be running the car in 3rd a lot.

2500! I new it was going to be high. How will it sound? My 98' Mustang chugs along nicely at 1200 RPM!! doing 60 in 5th. I like it. At that RPM the engine will never need servicing. The STi on the other hand seems like it could be a nightmare to maintain with a small high-revibg engine complicated by a turbo.

That's not high
2500 rpm on a 7000 redline is nada.
It'll sound lovely and it'll do 2500 rpm for at least a couple of hundred thousand kilometres if you keep up the service schedule; especially oil changes.
Remember, this is a Japanese powerplant. Don't give it a second thought.
Cheers
ps I'm fond of American powerplants. I'm still sitting on a Holley 4-barrel and an original aluminum intake manifold for a car stolen 7 years ago!

Do you know anything about Subaru engines. A nightmare to maintain?
Subaru out classes Mustang in every way when it comes to reliability. There is no comparison.
You just keep that Mustang. I just love seeing 500 Mustangs on my way to work every day.

Anyway, I'm not sure how much snow and ice you get down there but last time I checked it was...ahhh... ZERO. Anyone living in Florida needs an All-wheel-drive vehicle like they need another hole in the head.

LOL...You know, I came back from Florida on vacation in March and you are right, my wife and I couldn't believe how many Mustangs there were on the road! It was like every second car was a Stang. It was funny there were so many. Why is that? There are very few here in Toronto and it's a city of 4 million. (they all have more expensive cars)

Secondly, we don't have any snow but we have rain every day in the summer. I mean every day. South Florida gets a ton of rain during the rainy season.
I used to have a heavily modded LS1 z28. Before that a modded LT1 Z28. Those cars didn't have much traction when the roads were dry and when the roads were wet, forget about it - Those cars were dangerous when the roads were wet. High horse power rwd cars don't work that well on wet roads.
I'll stick with awd.
Also speaking of awd. We have tons of 4x4 Trucks, jeeps, etc. We have tons of off road trails. We also have a rally race school in Central Florida.
In the winter a good part of the Everglades and other swamp regions are dry and they have miles and miles of sand trails.
