I got my STI just coupe days ago. I don't understand about the cluster. I knew we could adjust the redline RPM, but it has 7K, 8K and 9K. Which one should I set at for safty if I am running stock motor?

If you are are running your new STi in properly, then you should set it to about 4000rpms as this will warn you to change up in case you decide to overstep on the gas. best to take it easy on your new car like the rest of us sub lovers

Yeah, I understand the new car step. I am not going over 4K RPM when I driving now. The thing just i am getting curious about the 7-8-9K

 

Umm... You do realize that you’re adjusting the warning shift light, not the redline.

 

Yeah that sounds about right, an interesting note though, in Japan the STi has a 8000 rpm redline because of the variable valve timing. Wish ours was like that.

 

Yeah we do, but, we also have more displacement so they brought down the redline, mabe in the future they will make some cams to bump up our redline to 8000.

 

Oh, Wantgoback. I recomend that you set the shift light at about 5800rpms, I've done some reaserch on the best shifting points for the STi and what I've found to be the concensus was redline in first and after that shift at 6000rpms, so taking into account reaction time 5800 or 5900 would give you optimal timing. That's after you've broken it in.

 

JDM also has 'shim under bucket' design, which helps up the redline 5 to 800 rpm w/out valve-float.

Are the USDM STi motors hand built and balanced? I have heard that they are and that they aren't...I would think that since most baseline dyno's have been so tightly clustered (257-261) that some extra special attn is given to these motors

 

I don't think that the STi engine is handbuilt, or they would have put it on the brochure and upped the price.
