Silver TT / Dan,
I'm with you: I prefer the sleeper look of the WRX to the "look at me!" wing and pink(!) lettering. That said, the STi is so undeniably cool isn't hard to diss it with a straight face. More like anguished longing.
But if you can afford either one, you can always test drive the WRX and see if it is satisfying. If not, there's your answer!

i see and undertand what u are saying hedonic. but i like the look of the STi a lot.
yet i at the same time i appreciate and admire the exterior look of the new STi, there is a reason its got a fancy spoiler and logo saying STi, with large hood scoop. too let all those other sport/race cars know who is the boss. the STi looks way cooler than the normal WRX, but its like a super fine hot sexie babe... everyone knows shes hot, but does she want to look super sexy and a mini skirt show off her hot legs and hot hooters or does she want want to be sleeper like the WRX and cover up yet still be appreciated in a different way. i dont kno if my comparison makes sense but im jus trying to say that the STi looks crazy its down for one thing and thats performance, like the hot chick with the mini skirt is down to give great performance, as the WRX can give good performance with a more conservative look as the conservative chik can good performance. =) hehe im high as a hite right now so i hope wen i sober up this will make more sense to me..

Keep in mind, most of us have been waiting for the STi for a looooooong time--I was waiting for the Rex to hit the US, and bought a 2k2 one because my old Impreza (1995, 136k miles) died a horrible death-- oil everywhere, smoke, pieces of metal bouncing... I'm traumatized. At any rate, I was hoping to wait until the STi was released, which we all knew was coming, but couldn't. I'm a bit bummed, and waiting to kill my warranty and pay down the loan a bit before I start doing crazy things to my Rex. The stock exhaust, from the engine on, is destined for someone else's car, in the not so distant future.
The STi has a few things, including a specially designed suspension, Driver controlled center differential, etc. in addition to the glitz, that make it worth the extra money for a DRIVER, but not a driver, if you take my meaning. Some of these things (DCCD for example) aren't worth modding into a Rex, or would be very difficult to do so with anyway. Off the lot, with the same driver, the STi is a league beyond the Rex. The Rex is plenty fast, plenty powerful, handles beautifully, is easily dialed up several notches, yadda yadda. The STi hits the street dialed up.
Drive them both. Decide whether or not you can live paying less and developing the Rex, or if you'd rather hit the street with a rocket under warranty. Either way, you can't go wrong. You'll be happy with both, and the 10k you save initially can go into a new exhaust, a new intercooler, new fuel rails and injectors, new boost management, etc. bit by bit, as you decide you need/want/can't live any longer without it. Eventually, you'll have 300hp anyway.
But I would buy an STi if I were in your position (as money doesn't seem to faze you much).
