lowering the STi
Does anyone out there know if you can lower the STi without adversely affecting the handling of the car or replacing the entire strut/spring unit with an adjustable coil-over? Basically, could I just throw some shorter springs on the car without changing anything else to lower it? Thanks.

The golden rule:
You can upgrade the shocks without upgrading the springs.
But never lowing the springs without changing the shocks.
Otherwise you will end up with a lowered car that looks good, but handles worse and has shocks that need replacing within a few thousand miles.

I drove five Sti's at Firebird Raceway on four different tracks, and could not imagine lowering one. It would take away too much fun and handling of the car. I could cut corners at the "curb" not really a curb- it was not even hard on the suspension. This car comes from the factory set up perfect suspension wise.IMO. Lowering it for looks is a whole different story though. To each his own.

Well, a number of people have commented that the STi has more roll and dive than the Evo. Putting the STi lowering springs or the tarmac springs on it might help. The idea in my mind is not lowering so much as just a bit stiffer. Of course replacement rear sway bar and bushings could help as well.
Anyway, I agree that you wouldn't want to significantly stiffen the springs without changing the struts, nor would you want to significantly lower the car and expect handling to improve without other changes. But a small (1/2 inch) lowering might not be bad, would it? Similarly, a set of springs with slightly stiffer rates might be OK with the STi struts, no?
On the other hand, I'm thinking maybe I should wait until Prodrive, Cobb, etc. come out with some sort of package that covers most of this and has been tested as a package.
