Intercooler placement?
Intercooler placement?
I'm kinda new at this so bear with me.
The Evo 8 has a front mounted intercooler whereas the STi has a top mounted one. I was wondering which way is better because I've noticed a lot of the professionally modified STi's and WRX's move it to the front not to mention direct air flow seems like it would be better vs. deflected flow, via hood scoop .

I think the advantage of having a front mount vs a top mount is that its a lot easier to cool when going faster being right behind your bumper, and you can make them a lot being part of the frontal area of your car rather than tucked under the hood, on the top of your engine.
I posted this on a similer topic a while back:
Another reason is due to the fact that the EJ-series, being a flat four with a lessened vertical footprint, leaves a lot more room above it in the engine compartment.
This creates a perfect spot for the intercooler directly above the intake port on the engine and only a short distance away from the turbo. Making it far more efficient then the long runs of intercooler pipeing required on a front mount intercooler.
