installing a subwoofer in your STi
Has anyone put a subwoofer in the trunk of their STi? I am going to put one in mine but I am worried that because the trunk has no way to vent to the passenger cabin, the sub's sound will simply be trapped in the trunk; thus rendering the sub useless. I have considered cutting a pass through into the back seat or cutting holes in the parcel shelf to vent into the cabin but I wanted to see how other have deat with this problem before I go cutting holes in my new $32,000 car.
If you have a sub, what kind of box is it in, do you have problems hearing it, and how did you vent it into the cabin (if you did)?
Much Thanks!

no worries for me.
single 12" jl sub in a sealed box. powered by 150 watts of soundstream amp.
rattles the rear view and side mirrors just fine...
btw no venting. remember, low frequency can travel very well and through many materials. so you have seat foam and carpet and some felt on the rear shelf...

i've done several installs before, just did one on a BMW 535is an the sub didn't work until i created a passthrough in the back seat. but if you say it works fine, i'll take your word for it.

I have a 12" JL W3 in a sealed box{facing the trunk lid} powered by a JL 250/1 and it is awesome. If I turn up the bass, the rearview mirror looks like water after you have thrown a rock into it.

Memphis 50x2 bridged mono going to a Memphis 12 inch. Way to much bass. May step down to a 10 inch. Unreal how much bass even with the gain on the amp turned way, way down.
No porting of the trunk.

I think it just depends how much bass you want. I'm running a jl 12w6 off a xtant6.1 in a 1cu ft sealed inclosure. I think its a little short on bass for rap stuff but perfect for everything else which fits me fine. But it might also seem that way since I'm not turning it up enough because my front stage is very strong (Boston Z6s running off xtant 1.1i's). I'd say install your sub...give it a month or so....and then decide if you need to vent some bass into the cabin.
Even though most of us have the same car there are still a number of variables (sub, enclosure type/size, power, sounds dampening). But I'd guess that unless you're a bass nut it should be enough.

Here's mine. It's a 10" Image Dynamics Sub. More than I need. The box is built right across the back. Behind the box between the seats is a Phoenix Gold Titanium 4 channel amp. I have the pass through in my car (Canadian) and when I open it you can see the AMP with the three blue lights come on. Opening it up has no effect on how the bass sounds though.
