It was a braking device used on manual trans Subies that actuated the rear brakes when the car was in neutral and not moving. As such it allowed you to sit at any angle hill, up or down, and the car would be held in place for you.
To deactivate/disable the feature you only needed to clutch out, shift into gear and apply gas.
It was sweet.

i'm pretty sure i read about that in a recent brochure for the legacy wagons. i'm pretty sure it was as you say, just for the manual cars, cause the autos have that feature built into them anyways. i remember thinking that if they put that feature on any subaru, it should definitely come on the WRX. but maybe we traded that and got a better tranny, eh... would be nice sometimes though

The switch is there because the scooby lights are auto off but there are times when you don't have the key in the ignition but need to be seen so as not to be hit by traffic.
