Advice on importing STI required
Hi All,
I presently live in the UK and have imported a 1996 STI wagon.
I will be relocating to upstate New York in a few months and would like some feedback on wether it is worth me bringing the car over.
Emissions from the car were tested yesterday and were low (%CO and hydrocarbons) It still has catalysts fitted I think.
If I brought it over would :
I get insurance for reasonable cost
Be able to sell it on (it's right hand drive)
Be able to get spares locally
Or would I be better selling it here (ca $16,000) and buying a new one in USA (how much are they going to be?)
Thanks in advance
John

Try selling it there. It will only cost about $25 to advertise it for a couple of weeks. If it doesn't work out, then bring it and then try over here. That way you can say that you tried.
A new one is anywhere from $23K to $26K depending what dealership you go to.

I dont' thing the STi is legal here due to emissions/crash safty and etc. What i mean is that people tried to import elise and older evo's and STi and end up swaping the parts over using the vin from a used car lot here.
My advise is to sell there and buy a 2.5L STi here.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the advice.
What's the power and performance like on the 2.5, we don't see them over here at all, so I have no knowledge of them.
My STI is ca 290 BHP/250 lb/ft and 0-60 in 4.6 secs.
It's a bit slow below 3000 rpm, before turbo gets going, so gear changes are often necessary for overtaking lines of traffic.
Thanks for the advice.

The STi will be availible in June and will be over $30,000 and have 300hp/torque. USDM WRX's are only 227hp/tq and are as stated, between $23,000 and $24,000 with used '02 WRX's (the first year that we got any) going for just under $20,000.
The 2.5RS, which is the N/A 2.5l that is basically our base model Impreza sedan now (used to be the high end model in the 98-01 model years) is only 165hp/tq, but these can be had for $10,000-15,000 used or $19,000 or so in the new models. The torque of the 2.5l is surprizingly different before 3000rpms though.
Anything else you need to know?

Nope, guess that is enough to make the decision - anyone in the UK want a STI?
Have been told a written offer for the new job will be in the post, so I should be in US as soon as visa is organiesd (3-4 months if you pay them $1000?)
Will leave Scooby here and buy one in US or something American maybe?
Thanks for all the advice.

Corvette... Viper maybe, thats about it. Everything else sucks. Exept maybe the GTO when it comes out, but thats just a rebadged Holden (AKA built in Australia

Yeah, I agree with everyone else on the American car issue. Most of the US stuff (save the SUV's, but that's a different story) is pretty unrefined by Euro/JDM standards. There are a few exceptions that were mentioned here (Viper, 'Vette, Lincoln LS, and maybe the Caddie CTS), but I'd steer clear of everything else for at least another 3 years or so. Things are changing to the better, primarily due to GM actually having a CAR GUY as #2 now (Bob Lutz), but it'll be a while.
Cheers,

(Actually, I wouldn't mind owning one of the Corvette engined CTS-Vs when they become avail next year...)
