is the STI going to be the 'type R's" of Subaru?

In the States, probably. In Japan the closet thing to a type R would be an STI type RA spec C. These models are stripped to the bare essentials, i.e. no sound deadening materials.

yeah STI SpecC is the typeR version, don't think is coming to North America though

Hehe.. Now that you mention it, there was actually an Impreza Type R. The Subaru Impreza WRX Sti Version 6 Type R. This was the last coupe version of the Sti. The sedan version was an RA.

I wouldn't say that the spec C is anything like the Honda type r. the type R is a mix of performance amd luxary. the spec c is stripped. Just performance. But there was a WRX STI Type "R" like samurai said. But if you want to go crazy you could say the STI is like the honda/acura type r in that it is a special, limited version that more people will own stickers for than the actual car.
