Hey,
I just changed my headunit last night to a Alpine 9833 and the sound difference is amazing!! I have the upgraded subaru speakers which were installed at the factory. I plan on upgrading the speakers in the next couple of months to some JL audio components. I know what you are saying about losing the 6 changer but the improvement in sound quality is worth getting a new headunit in my opinion.
I used the pocket from a forester to take up the extra din slot and put the headunit on the bottom. All you have to do is drill two extra holes in the factory side plates and grind down the froward slots for the screws to mount the pocket. It looks almost stock, I also flipped the unit so the door flips down.
Super.
