always heard them as detector. but i imagine thats what you are talking about. for a basic first radar detector, id start off with a more expensive Cobra. If you want to throw down BANK and be really safe, pick up a Valentine. They are not as compact friendly, but they work like a charm. So, you can go very basic and cheap (one direction, basket full of false alarms, not many bands ESPECIALLY Laser) or something mid range (has directional arrows, less false alarms, far more bands) and the theres Valentine adn other for the tru....law breaker. LOL GL!
DONT GET A JAMMER! They are out there. but not worth it as IIRC, they are illegal. on what level? I dont know. but dont get it! lol

You can expect to pay anywhere from $20-$400. It really depends on the type of driving you do and how often. Install is a PITA.
1)remove power socket cover
2)Insert radar detector plug in socket
3)Go fast, but dont get caught!
edit: id say 90% of redar detectors out there are plug and play (power socket) . some have controls on the plug. Some you have to hardwire into your car.

A valentine or an Escort 9500ix or equivalent will run you around 500. DO your research some offer things that the others dont. IE, valentine 1 offers directional arrows, escort 9500ix offers heads up speed, known/reported red light camera locations, known/reported speed traps. Both offer superb coverage and detection.
Most standard radar detectors are simple straight forward and easy to install. Cig lighter for power and two suction cups for the mount on windshield. You can go fancier and get a mount that attaches to your rearview mirror and hard wire the power. Kits are offered for that. again really simple.
Dont waste your money on the cheap units and really the mid range is a waste IMO. look at the cost of a speeding ticket plus school (if your eligible). if you buy a detector for 500 and it alerts you to a chippy looking for speeders and saves you a ticket, well it just paid for its self.

OP, Read lots of reviews that do side by side comparisons.
I dont think you will be unhappy with either of the two units (Escort 9500ix or Valentine 1)

Police scanners, radar dectors are useless. they catch you by the time your dector gives you any warning. IF you really need to speed. you'd be better with a laser jammer...not recommending it since it is illegel, but you do what you have to do to get what you want right?
