Can anyone help plz... I am willing to pay another $200-250 or so to be able to get rid of the bass distortion on the stock speakers (2003 WRX sedan). I am not a true audiophile and don't want to give up the existing 6-CD changer, so plz don't say to change the HU.
My question is this: bright & early 7:30 Monday AM I bring my rex in to dealer for exhaust system upgrades and I could ask the guys to put in (A) "upgraded speakers" x4 for $150 (parts cost only) or (B) some third party speakers that I buy at Circuit City or whatever. I went to CC last nite and there were a couple of pretty OK 6.5" speakers, but the total cost for speakers + installing woulda been $220 for namebrand (Infinity or Alpine) or $180 for no-name. Those numbers include the $40 install labor.
Wouldn't it be better to get Subaru to put in their factory upgrade speakers?
If not, please recommend specific brand that I should check out and buy today or Sunday.
THANKS FOR PROMPT RESPONSE

One more thing, when I used the AOL car audio installation program, the only 3rd party speakers of any kind that they listed were 4" speakers for the "rear doors" which at least were a little cheaper, in the $30-50/pr range. Does anyone know the actual speaker sizes allowed in the doors? It looks relatively difficult to access them to so, and I doubt I'll have time to do so before Monday AM.

6.5 fit
The 6.5 Infinitys fit (they're in my car) but you have to have a spacer.
Are you good with hand tools? If so .... go buy a plastic cutting board ~1/4" thick and use that to make spacers.
The factory 'premium' speakers/head unit suck. My car came with the upgrade system. It was the second thing I replaced on my car (wheels and tires were first).

All 4
I put the Infinitys in front and Panasonic in the rear doors (it's just fill for me ..... after several years of Naval Aviation..... well, some things I just can't hear any more)
But the I do know that the Infinitys in the front (and the Alpine head unit) are way beyond the 'upgraded' Subaru system.

My plan: take my time, do the research, and stick to the exhaust/swaybar mods from Subaru for tomorrow.
One last
tho...what size are your Alpines? I might just be sufficiently easy (translation: lazy) to try to replicate what you did line-by-line.
