Reciever Size?
5.25" should fit fine with an adapter, which you can get from crutchfield. I've heard some people on this forum say that 6.5" will fit back there.
However, if you want to use 4" you'll also need an adapter. If you have the time, patience, and don't mind destroying the back door speakers that came with your car (they are crap) then Subaru has provided you with an adapter already. I installed my 4" polk speakers this way.
Keep in mind, this does take a bit of work, but it works out nicely. In the end you might still decide to take it somewhere to get the back ones installed once you read this.
The stock rear speakers are glued to a plastic frame (see 1st picture). I ripped the crap speaker from the frame and then I cut off the back of the plastic frame (see 2nd picture).
I just happened to take pictures of my rear speakers while doing the install. Dunno why, but I did.

I then filed down the part that sticks up around the center ring so the new speaker could sit flat on the frame (see 1st pic again).
Placing the new speaker in my new "adapter" I penciled where the holes should be tapped. I then removed the new speaker and made holes by putting in some screws where I had penciled (I have a nasty habit of putting holes in new speakers with a screwdriver).
Put the new speakers back on the "adapter" and screw it down.
Ta da! Now just hook up the new speakers and mount them into the door.
This was a huge deal for me. I wasn't sure it would work and I was destroying my stock speakers. But in the end it worked out great.

Interesting idea. I might go ahead and try it. I' can exchange the 4" for the 5.25" version of the same speaker, but since I'd have to due it via UPS it'd take like another week and I really want to get this done sooner rather than later. I'll probably give it a go tomorrow. I don't plan on needing the stock speakers for anything and this seems like a cheap and realtively easy way to make the 4" ones fit. Thanks again for the info. I'd be lost witthout this site.

Well I gave it a shot and it worked perfectly. I just pulled out the speakers, ripped out the cone, snipped off the magnet, and filed/sanded down the area where the screws would go, drilled holes, and used some relatively short screws to secure the speaker to the plastic. Everything fit perfectly and I was able to reattach it to the door just as if it came from the factory. No more crappy speakers
Thanks again everyone!

After having the system for almost a week I have to say this is a great little system for someone on a budget. The reciever is feature packed and sounds very good. The speakers sound suprisingly good. Nice crisp highs and strong bass(atleast as strong as can be expected out of coaxial 6.5" and 4" coaxials). For 310 bucks shipped for everything, I really enjoy it. My old car had a 10" woofer in it and alot of the time I just didn't really care to hear that much bass so all I really wanted with this car was a moderately priced mp3 deck, and speakers that sounded decent to me. This system definately fits me well. My only complaint is that the highs are sort of week on the 4" speakers in back only, probably due to how low they are. If i put my head at ear level with them, they sound fine but sitting position you can't hear the highs as well. Other than that I have no complaints.
